Vibes today because apparently you can write a whole scene about an orc pushing a smelly girl he accidentally saved into a pond and never once use the word moist as a descriptor

The noisy splash of feet stomping into the shallow water behind her snapped her back to her senses. She found her iron cuffs pressed into the flesh above her breasts, and she had apparently started to curl her body forward over them unconsciously. “What are you waiting for? The water is safe. The spring is too small for water creatures.” That was good to know, but Sorrel still couldn’t fully accept her new captor. With the pirates, she had known immediately what they wanted from her. The captor who had come before Perrin—Well, she had eventually learned what he had wanted from her too. But what did this orc want from her? She wasn’t about to wash off this disgusting armor that she had learned to love just to make his taking of her more pleasant for him. In fact— A palm smacked across the center of her back, pitching her forward into the water. Sorrel was able to get one small gasp of air before she clamped her mouth shut against the invasion of water. Water rushed into her nose, the unpleasant burning sensation spurring her to quickly find her feet and rise from the water like an angry wave. The icy torrent of water in the chilly night air was sobering. Her breaths came out in angry gasps.

It was like a giant had scooped a handful out of the land itself. The hills ended in sheer cliffs, their green crowns chopped clean through, and what slopes remained tumbled down in lazy folds until they all spilled into a vast lake penned in by towering stone walls. “Ah, Luminess, the impossible city. Home sweet home,” Gorum said, followed by a long sigh as he leaned past Taran to look at it coming on in the distance. “The first magister shaped all this, you know. It used to be all hills down all the way to the sea.” Gorum looked at her expectantly, but while it was hard for Kaela to muster up any excitement for a history lesson, the view itself was—she had to admit—a little impressive. The city stretched out across the lake’s surface, where it appeared that even the water was under magic’s command. Great arcing streams rose up from the lake and hung in the sky over the city below, frozen in mid-air as if the same giant who had scooped out the cliffs had plucked them straight out of the riverbeds and pinned them there. And beyond it, the seawall. As high as the cliffs to its sides and shaped like a wave that had yet to crest, the massive wall made of seawater glimmered even in the overcast daylight.

Hian recognized the old homesteads as they passed them, and it suddenly dawned on him. “Are you taking us to your parents’ house?” She whirled on him; her face wild-eyed, as if what he had said was insane. “No! Why would I be?” “Because… aren’t we close to Gold-by-the-Fence?” It was dim and rapidly approaching dark, but Hian was almost positive that the little lights in the distance belonged to the small village where she had grown up. “No!” Kaela’s eyes darted to the lights and back to him. “Well, yes! But I just brought us here because the fence can be so shoddy.” She took off, her stride even faster now.

I deeply enjoy finding lines in novels where I can really feel how pleased the author was with themselves after they wrote it. I finished #swordheart this week, and while there were many such lines in the book, this was my favorite.

“Well, that aside, someone had to try awfully hard to start this particular fire.” Hian watched a Tree Guard walking by with a soot-stained barrel in his arms, a crust of green crystals around the edges of the lid. “You think the greendrip was the target?” “Perhaps,” Seisyll said. “We’re still sorting out how much was destroyed. A few barrels could have easily gone missing, too.” “A coverup? Pretty daring for smugglers.” Hian felt the familiar prickle of interest that only a good mystery could evoke. It was a clever idea. The Tree Guard did a rough count of the stores when the shift changed to assure no substantial amount of greendrip was missing. If anyone wanted to steal a significant amount, the damage from a fire would potentially cover up the theft. “And smart.”
