Don't, ah, feel obligated to read this or the nested side-quests right before you try to fall asleep.

Drink some Sleepytime Bear tea instead, maybe, and peruse this later.

Also: Jenny Cohn is a phenomenal constellation thinker.

I can't imagine why an Apartheid fan wouldn't want young people learning about the geography of history.

Also, a reminder about who some of the funding partners were who helped him purchase the platform.

They are...not known for loving free speech. Journalists sure shouldn't trust his platform.
Elon Musk: "I'm a free speech absolutist!"

Also Elon Musk: "Anyone who teaches students that America was built on stolen land is guilty of treason and should be imprisoned."

Look, some of us tried to warn people that Elon Musk doesn't care one bit about free speech. But did anyone listen?

Wow. "World Relief is mobilizing immediately to protect the 4,400 refugee families under our care and preserve stability"
It's utterly insane to open the Urgent Needs page of the World Relief website and see the US listed at top because we are detaining refugees who are here legally. Jesus wept.

Every time you hum a tune from "The Sound of Music," thank Frances Perkins & Gertrude Ely.

Even with their help, Maria von Trapp blurted something that got the family detained entering the country.

Perkins faced impeachment threats over immigration.

This should be a national shutdown
Unions and community orgs are calling for a Minnesota-wide shutdown in 10 days to protest the ferocious assault by federal immigration agents. They're saying on Jan 23, no work, no school, no shopping. SEIU Local 26, UNITE HERE Local 17, & others are supporting, w/ more to join. By me, Amie Stager

The refusal to learn from that history and the people who lived it is one reason for the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S. today.

If you want specific examples of Black people resisting authoritarianism, here’s a good place to start.

Oooook I'm still happy for @jeffreygoldberg.bsky.social & @theatlantic.com may their Signals ever thrive

but bumped into a 2025 Atlantic interview on Gilded Age corruption:

"What did the Gilded Age build that's most worth remembering?"

"It began to build public infrastructure..."

I like the framing of how simple it'd be to tweak things to just be...average.

I'd also add:
"America's problems are solved problems. Just not now."

Reform/prog era women built so much architecture later left neglected or dismantled.

Unions, nutrition, pub health, New Deal, health care,
If there's one empirical insight I'd want everyone to understand about American politics, it's this:

America's problems are solved problems. Just not here.

What would change if the US simply matched the average of 31 peer democracies? Not Denmark or Norway. Just the middle of the pack. 🧵

I'm so far from an expert the best contribution I'd make is "what if shark parents did the tooth fairy thing, it'd be nuts!" like a walking Far Side,

but I do wish cross-disciplinary field trips were part of prof dev bc you'd get more from this than you will from a microcert in Software Brand™️
Folks, I am once again announcing an open call for guest experts to join me and my students for a day of shark research!

I'm not a veteran, didn't grow up in a military family, and even I know stuff like this.

You know, sometimes a kid pushes the rules because they *want* to get sent out to the hallway.

When that's the case, no point wasting energy being shocked they broke the rules.
Breaking NYT:

The Pentagon used a secret aircraft painted to look like a civilian plane in its first boat attack, according to officials briefed on the matter.

The laws of armed conflict forbid combatants from feigning civilian status.

That is a war crime called "perfidy."

He's done great work covering faith-based and clergy presence and actions at detention centers, protests, vigils, etc.

There's a linchpin that could be addressed in immediate short-term:

compete to employ new or would-be ICE agents.

Recruit. Offer living wage & good hours.

Don't underestimate how grim the rural rust belt employment scene is.

I guarantee some recruits trying to pay med bills or kids' braces.

Op Ed framing prompted a dry (wine pun) chuckle -

also:

-ignores peaceful clergy protesters (see @jackjenkins.me coverage) inc clergywomen

-ignores 1st term evangelical women who visited border, mobilized re: family separation

-ignores many women who voted R in 2024 & are livid rn

Map from my copy of an 1832 atlas by educator & cartographer Emma Willard (1787-1870). She argued for equality in women's education, noting women were equally capable of subjects like math & philosophy. In 1821 she opened the first school in the U.S. to offer women's higher education.

Blast Long Covid symptom education/research/treatment & protocol info to U.S. physicians 24/7,

because right now we have a lot of Americans sitting foggy & unmotivated in recliners, or totally disabled,

due to Long Covid,

and that has real impact on organizing/mobilizing movements.
