Pillow fort, obviously. Was this even a question?
Where would you rather be?
1. secret moon base
2. boozy bookstore
3. hiding in a pillow fort
4. haunting ancient forests

The same thing happened tonight, then a different project student ignored me on the bus home. Maybe this is some kind of Pound Shop Superpower that I should learn to harness. Does my ukulele make me invisible? Or just too embarrassing to know? Either way, clearly I should take it to class...
I went out tonight to make a noise in a pub in Dundee. While I was singing a ridiculous song about Pacman, one of my tutees walked in.
I tried to say hello but I think they were pretending they hadn't seen me. But it's okay! Your lecturers are human too and enjoy doing daft things in public!

Tonight someone said to me "I wouldn't think to ask anyone else this, but did you watch the world Tram Driver champinships?"
Two things:
1. Why would you think I'm the sort of person who'd watch such a thing?
2. Of course I did. Come on.

I've just learned that today, 8th October, is World Octopus Day. Because of course it is. When else would it be?

I realise we all have a lot to deal with right now, but, if I ever get to be Prime Minister (and many things will have to go badly wrong if that happens) this will be my first act:
It will be illegal to make bin bags that don't indicate which end is the one you can expect to open.
Vote for me.

It's pretty wild to me that investigators have uncovered that anti-trans campaigns are largely funded by the fossil fuel industry, and that the presumed motivations are pretty directly to redirect the public conversation away from climate change... and that this isn't bigger news.

Working on the first "Fundamentals of Software Engineering" lecture I'm delivering tomorrow morning. I'm trying not to turn it into a rant about how everything is broken. Place your bets.

Yuuuuup. Also, I don't give a shit if some of the worst people in the world think I am being performative or am virtue signaling. Fuck 'em. They don't get to tell me how to be.
Anyway, trans rights are human rights, y'all. It's not complicated.

To my fellow cishet dudes: when we are quiet about supporting the trans community, the only voices anyone hears are the Charlie Kirks of the world. Don't let accusations of being "performative" or "virtue signaling" shut you up - that's their whole point. Our voices are needed now more than ever.

Filk has to be the most fun thing I've got into in the last few years, for a number of reasons. Partly learning that music and songwriting is for everyone, but also that, yes, there's so much entertaining writing in there.
There are days when I am suddenly reminded that some of the most brilliant lyricists working today are part of the filk community.

I've finally solved the problem of how to connect different devices to my speakers at different times by getting a long wire. It's like bluetooth, but a physical connection. What sorcery is this?
I post this triviality because... well. Just for a break, honestly.
Now, back to the screaming.

Look I know it's a sjot inheritance and we have deep rooted structural economic and political problems and switching PMs won't solve them. But saying "fascist hooliganism is bad and we're gonna nick the culprits" is the easy part, and yet he is just. Not. Doing. It.

No one would bother writing a column complaining that racists aren't welcome in the Scottish Greens, regardless of how much they care about tackling the climate emergency.
Why do so many journalists struggle with the idea that we take the same position on anti-trans voices?

I got asked for my autograph once. It was a student who came up to me in the pub asking me to autograph what he claimed to be a Whitespace program.
I've no idea who was laughing at whom, but since long ago I resolved to not take myself at all seriously, I signed it anyway.

When I was in high school I said to myself "one day I will be a famous writer, and therefore I must practice my autograph" and I DID. My friends laughed at me then, but who is laughing now? Answer: My friends, because even if I was correct it was still an incredibly dorky thing to do.
Something I've always wondered about people signing autographs is did, you have to practiced it? Like, if I were to suddenly wake up "autograph famous" tomorrow, my autograph would be my signature, which is essentially just a squiggly line. Did you have to work to make yours it legible?
