The history of Hollywood's Golden Age is linked with the story of Europeans fleeing the rise of fascism in the 1930s. This is especially true for some of the film composers of that era. None more so than the great Franz Waxman, whose birthday we celebrate today (1906-1967).

Hundreds of Mexican Firefighters arrived both today and yesterday in Southern California, to assist with the ongoing Wildfires in Los Angeles County. Most are with the National Forestry Commission and the Civil Relief Corps, with others coming from the Mexican Army.

Many of my early forays into composition & music theory were through books I checked out via the Oxnard Public Library. I also discovered many movies because they had a large number of Criterion titles on DVD. It changed and enriched my life.

Took a heroic dose of mushrooms and experienced GURRELIEDER. Excellent performance by the LA Phil & LA Master Chorale. Zubin Mehta is in good form for 88!
