Lake whitefish are spawning this time of year, so commercial season is closed. The eggs will overwinter and then hatch early in the spring.

Some of the #GreatLakes most damaging invasive species - like zebra mussels + round gobies - were introduced via ballast water. However, ballast water management systems on ships have been shown to reduce the abundance of living organisms in ballast water by more than 98% www.wpr.org/news/conflic...
Tensions mount over conflicting ballast water regulations on the Great Lakes
American shippers are at odds with the Canadian government over its regulations that require all Great Lakes vessels or “lakers” to install systems to treat their ballast water by 2030.

Beyond Chicago's charismatic exotic animals (shout-out to Chance the Snapper), the city's waterways have also become home to less conspicuous - but environmentally harmful - exotic species like weatherfish, goldfish, and red swamp crayfish.

A good reminder to never release pets to the wild!
The city has seen its share of exotic animals, crawling, slithering and swinging, unattended in Chicago streets and waterways. But what happens when there’s a peacock strutting down the alley?
