Who am I? Professor at teaching uni in NJ, USA (posts my own, not speaking for institution) with focus on voicing #policeofficers’ experiences with #conflict #policing, post-conflict #policereform, & police-community trust dynamics in US & Northern Ireland. I study policing history & current trends.
Very, very important finding.
We find that community violence explains up to 1 in 5 anxiety cases at population level in NI.

It’s not a side issue-it’s central.

New paper out in BMJ Public Health ⤵️ We show that extrafamilial violence is an overlooked driver of MH in Northern Ireland. If ACE frameworks don’t include community violence, they’re incomplete.

I know they are man-repellents (let’s face it, I have no chance at this point anyway), but I’m so excited to have finally gotten a new pair of wide-leg farmer jeans (overalls). I waited months for them to go on sale, and voila!

It's Thanksgiving! Are you getting your eels ready? It's tradition!

The 1st Thanksgiving included a big table full of eels. And it's fitting. Tisquantum brought eels to the starving pilgrims that spring to celebrate their new treaty w/ the local Wampanoag tribe. 1/5

What in the fresh AI hell is this? Like, I even tried reading the paper and had to stop - a blood vessel burst in my brain because none of it made any sense.
This raises a very real question about how we talk about AI. To call this slop is to downplay the fact that it was published in an esteemed journal. We used to call such things fraud, but this suggests the publisher is innocent. AI has changed the terms of debate. We urgently need new norms.
"Runctitiononal features"? "Medical fymblal"? "1 Tol Line storee"? This gets worse the longer you look at it. But it's got to be good, because it was published in Nature Scientific Reports last week: www.nature.com/articles/s41... h/t @asa.tsbalans.se

Important, sobering writeup on the history of deportation policies and practices

Trump is a matter of degree, not kind

Notable to me is that many tactics he’s using were signed into law in 1996… for those who think it’s a “them” thing

Mapping Deportations: What 58 Million Removals Reveal about the History of the U.S. Immigration System
Over two centuries of deportation data and restrictive laws show that immigration enforcement is not a neutral process but a racial boundary-making system built across decades of policy decisions.

Well, well…this is a Thomas Nast work I hadn’t seen yet.

So much here…
How Republicans commemorated Thanksgiving in 1869--with a multi-racial/multi-ethnic gathering of people at a table with a centerpiece celebrating universal suffrage and self-government, and with an engraving of Castle Garden, the pre-Ellis Island point of disembarkation for immigrants.

I swore an oath to the Constitution in 1986. I've upheld it through 25 years of service and every day since I retired.

If Trump's trying to intimidate me, it won’t work. I’ve given too much to our country to be silenced by bullies who care more about power than the Constitution.

This means NSF dissertation improvement grants in the social sciences are simply...not happening.
NEW from me - NSF cancels grant scheme for social science research.

Seems the NSF quietly archived ALL calls for DDRIG grants in the SBE directorate. This is a massive blow for PhD students wanting to do cutting-edge social science research. 🏺🧪

Repeat:

Immigration is NOT the greatest threat to our national security.

What is? The willingness to use fear, racism, xenophobia, religious hate, fascism, and science denial to escalate violence and sow division.

I just learned the names of the service members ambushed yesterday:

Sarah Beckstrom, 20

and

Andrew Wolfe, 24

Sarah is my own daughter’s age.

I hope they know, as well as their families and friends, that they have a country behind them supporting them in recovery.
