RFK Jr. has now officially stated that he will dismantle the United States Preventive ServicesTask Force (USPSTF).

This is an independent body of expert scientists who volunteer their time to review data and provide guidance to Americans on important things like cancer screenings.
Exclusive | RFK Jr. to Oust Advisory Panel on Cancer Screenings, HIV Prevention Drugs
The task force determines which preventive services insurers must cover at no cost to patients.

I’m thinking physicians could still prescribe this off label, right? But obviously just sows more vaccine doubt.

Most people tune out when doctors rage about prior auth, opaque pricing, or middlemen sucking value out of the system. Except @mcuban.bsky.social.

Where we all see complexity, he sees opportunity. And he trusts doctors. Full episode:

This feels like a Parkland shooting moment. If Americans don't care about dead kids we aren't gonna get gun control.

If they don't care about their OWN DEAD KIDS then I'm not sure how you fight back against that
How firm is the hold of antivax beliefs?

From the parents of the 6 year old unvaccinated child who died of measles:

“Don’t do the shots,” the girl’s mother said. Measles, she added, is “not as bad as they’re making it out to be.” She noted that her four other children all recovered…

We've massively lost the ability to perform critical thinking
We've massively lost the ability to spot incorrect and misinformation
And we have so much information at our fingertips yet lack the ability to know if said information actually answers the question we have
We still aren’t taking the effect of phones and social media seriously.

We should be focusing on it the way we focused on cigarettes in the 80s or lead in gasoline before that.
NEW 🧵 Is human intelligence starting to decline?

Recent results from major international tests show that the average person’s capacity to process information, use reasoning and solve novel problems has been falling since around the mid 2010s

What should we make of this?

Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts.

Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressionally mandated. They’ve saved millions of lives. 🧵

I love it when @joho.bsky.social calls out @ucsfhealth.bsky.social docs lamenting Trump's attacks on NIH and CDC, like @anilmakam.bsky.social , @ewidera.bsky.social, and Monica Gandhi, after having amplified the misinformation that got us here. sciencebasedmedicine.org/ucsfapathy/
Welcome to the Resistance UCSF Doctors
The many doctors who are just now realizing that misinformation wasn't "COVID hysteria nonsense" have a lot of catching up to do to understand how the forces they've legitimized the led to this moment

Why can't you say BOMB at an airport but you can threaten nurses in a hospital? In the past week:

1) Nurse was beaten in Florida
2) HCWs tied up and wounded at an ICU at UPMC
3) ER doc and staff stabbed in Chicago

Why are threats to TSA more serious than threats to healthcare workers?

When we set out to do this analysis, we hoped to build on an existing methodology to study severe complications in early pregnancy — but there wasn't one. So, in consultation with dozens of experts, @sophiechou.bsky.social, Lizzie Presser and I developed our own. Here's how we did it:
Texas Won’t Study How Its Abortion Ban Impacts Women, So We Did
Since Texas banned abortion, no one has studied the statewide effects on pregnant women experiencing complications. Here’s how we sifted through data on millions of pregnancy hospitalizations and anal...

This piece was initially similar to @choo.bsky.social's fantastic BMJ opinion piece, but the more I wrote the more I really felt like all of this is about loss of trust in institutions, experts, and healthcare professionals.

Why Doesn’t Anyone Trust Doctors Anymore?
In light of RFK Jr.’s confirmation, it’s time for doctors to ask why we’ve lost the trust of the public — and what we can do to gain it back.

Someone start a Gofundme where we pitch in to hire Mayor @petebuttigieg.bsky.social to just do a daily fact checking in DC.

And if we're lucky maybe @mcuban.bsky.social will support it too
This is so smart. @petebuttigieg.bsky.social , thoughts ?

And if you see this. A reminder. This is not Twitter. You can engage here and have thoughtful discussions !

We all look forward to reading your thoughts
I keep saying Dems need to do a daily briefing on Capitol Hill and fill the void, fact check the WH. Hire Pete Buttigeig and give him a staff to do this.

This is why Dr. Titanji is such an expert - and why expertise and insight matter greatly.

This is bonkers-level stupidity that the CDC can’t report their findings for testing that… has to be done at the CDC.
There is testing for specific infections we send to the cdc. For example sequencing malaria parasites to determine species and things like leishmania test amongst others. With the gag order our cdc colleagues can run testing but can't report results.

Working on another op-ed about how doctors are feeling about these changes and the impact. Ex:

Harder to know appropriate guidelines for STI testing and treatment regiments
