If you want to actually visually distinguish an ETC gun with advanced propellants from a normal gun, btw - a lot of advanced propellants burn blue instead of orange (because it's burning more efficiently), which would give the muzzle flash a bluish tint
Theoretically, though, if you are willing to shell out for fancy propellants, you could get ETC guns able to achieve muzzle velocities 50-100% higher than modern chemical guns (up to 4 km/s, whereas conventional chemical guns can barely manage 2 km/s). So, that's cool!

People keep bringing up caseless ammo in response to this and I must tell you that the primary issue with caseless is not igniting it, it's the heat management (with a normal cartridge, the expelled casing carries most of the heat generated by the burn out the gun with it)
Since I've been on a "rambling about sci-fi weapons" kick, I figure I should point out the existence of electrothermal-chemical guns and how they're likely the actual future of firearms within this century

They were basically Nintendo actively rewriting the brand because it got a little bit too "Indepentend woman is strong on adventures" so they made strong guys yell at her, made her obey a guys orders even if totally nonsensical & literally how she wants to be a mom

While this anecdote is awesome, it is important to remember that many of the creatives behind Samus/Metroid were no longer alive or with the company by the time of Prime 1.
