Yuxi Wang et al., arXiv:2601.00684

Independently Day 5's paper, the current paper also demonstrates a polarization-maintaining hollow-core fiber in which modes of undesired polarizations are coupled to leaky modes of the fiber cladding.

365 Days of arXiv, Day 5.

Yizhi Sun et al., arXiv:2512.2451

A hollow-core fiber is designed where polarized modes in an undesired direction are rapidly attenuated. The fiber is capable of maintaining a desired polarization over long distances without contamination.

arxiv.org/abs/2512.24516
Polarization-Differential Loss Enabled High Polarization Extinction in Hollow-Core Fibers
Delivering a well defined state of polarization over hollow core fibres (HCFs) is pivotal for next generation ultra stable photonic systems. Yet in all existing HCFs, whether birefringent or not, thei...

Flegel, A. V., et al., arXiv:2512.24496

The authors derive analytic solutions to the time-dependent Schrodinger equation describing high-harmonic generation in a crystal structure subject to a low frequency, high intensity laser field.

arxiv.org/abs/2512.24496
Adiabatic approach for high harmonic generation in solids induced by intense low-frequency pulses
An analytic description of high harmonic generation (HHG) in solids induced by intense low-frequency pulses is presented within an adiabatic approach, which treats laser-matter interactions nonperturb...

Januariyasa, I. K., et al., arXiv:2512.25048

Computer-generated holography promotes growth of high aspect-ratio structures on an azopolymer layer. This technique enables a method of photolithography which does not require a mask.

arxiv.org/abs/2512.25048
All optical Lithography for Spatiotemporal Patterning of Azopolymer Microreliefs
Microstructured surfaces are central to photonics, biointerfaces, and functional coatings, yet they are typically fabricated through multi-step lithographic workflows requiring masks or molds and post...

Turtaev, S., et al., arXiv:2512.23514

The authors demonstrate bend-resistant transmission of structured light through a graduated-index fiber of their own manufacture by carrying out high-fidelity imaging of a panoramic scene.

arxiv.org/abs/2512.23514
Deformation enduring conveyance of structured light through multimode waveguides and its exploitation for flexible hair-thin endoscopes
The remarkable advancements in our capacity to synthesise structured light have facilitated the generation of any desired optical landscapes and even controlling the spatial distribution of light prop...

Uemura, T. et al., arXiv:2512.23559v1

The authors use phase-change properties of Sb2Se3 to induce an inversion of modes around the photonic band-gap, creating a tunable, high Q-factor photonic topological insulator.

arxiv.org/abs/2512.23559
Low loss switchable topological photonic crystal enabled by submicron-scale patterning and phase-change of Sb2Se3
Photonic topological insulators (PTIs) offer robust platforms for light manipulation, but reconfigurable control of their topological properties without degrading performance remains a major challenge...

I'm surprised nobody's pointed out that relying on an impoverished Global South to supply manpower for developed economies is pretty exploitative and unsustainable.
Birth rates are lowering *literally everywhere.* The only countries which keep growing in power will be the ones which continue to grow, and without immigration that will not be “the West.”
Concern over low birth rates was what the theocracy in Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale used to come to power.

The sad thing is that there are always far too convincing people to special-plead away the parallels as they are happening. The process is obfuscated until it's much too far along.
I understand looking for historical parallels when we’re at the stage of warning signs, but when the evil arrives the priority is to deal with what’s actually in front of you.

Thread up, but yes, this, my god THIS.

Everything you do matters. Everything. Everyone doing SOMETHING, it all adds up.

You throw enough sand in the gears, you can slow anything down so more can get out of the way. Maybe with enough sand you can stop it, I don't know, but throw your sand.
That's how serious this moment is.

And that's why every single thing against this and a few other administrations is the right thing to be doing.

Helping people survive individually. Boycotts. Information. Sand in gears. Inconveniently erased files. Whatever you got.

There was a long queue to the repair shop. There always seemed to be, these days.

The areas for fabrics and fibre, wood, metal, mechanics and electronics were all busy, but none more so than the dreams section.

"Oh, this has taken some beating, poor thing."

"Can you fix it?"

"We'll do our best."

Something I've thought often but never posted--turns out I wasn't alone.

Ironic how the ones always blowing on about hard times and strong men are usually the weak men in the process of making those hard times.
That old saw about how “good times make weak men” is true in the sense that stable times with material abundance create reactionaries who want to destroy the systems that protect them because they’re too sheltered and stupid to understand that things can get meaningfully worse.
