June 21 is Show Your Stripes Day—a time to spark conversation about how our world is warming.

This video shows how @noaa.gov temperature data for the U.S. is turned into the iconic stripes visualizations you may see shared today and tomorrow.

Last year, Nature posed a question: “The US is the world’s scientific superpower–but for how long?” Not even a year later, the cracks are already visible.

There is a historical parallel to what is happening: Lysekoism. infoepi.substack.com/p/us-adopti...

Political ideology is replacing peer review. America is quietly reviving a failed Soviet experiment--Lysenkoism.

Look what happens when you get the cars out!

Union Sq/Broadway yesterday. Lots of peds & #bikenyc - many going against their signals - but witness the innate negotiation ballet that occurs when dangerous vehicles aren't around.

Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability & quality of life.

Such an obvious no-brainer, it’s remarkable that so many cities HAVEN’T done the same.
Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change.

US politics right now is like that episode of Oprah where she gave away all the cars, but instead she kept giving cars and taking cars away and setting cars on fire and making people beg for cars and also didn't understand what cars actually were

The National Weather Service took more than 150 years to build. Forget flight or the internet or whatever - public-service systems like this are the marvels of the modern world. Conceptual cathedrals, constructed across generations and dedicated to the public good.
The U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayer—equivalent to a single cup of coffee—and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1).

Next year, the EU will require cars to have buttons & dials -- not just touchscreens -- to get a top safety rating.

This is a great move. Drivers can fiddle with knobs & buttons without taking their eyes off the road, but they can't do that with touchscreens.

(Even better: Tesla will hate this)
Cars will need fewer screens and more buttons to earn five-star safety rating in Europe
Euro NCAP will release new testing guidelines in 2026.
