The room is
almost all
elephant.
Almost none
of it isn’t.
Pretty much
solid elephant.
So there’s no
room to talk
about it.

You’ve heard it said, “Do not write your own encryption.”

But I say to you also. “Do not try to write your own register allocator.”

Sometimes I think about all the interesting things that aren’t getting built right now because everyone’s energy is being sucked into the AI hype one way or another.

I think this might explain why we tend to see non-vitrified ice more frequently in nucleus than surrounding cytoplasm by cryo-FIB-ET.

Why didn’t anyone think of this before?
RFK has announced that he is developing a vaccine against all viruses. Yes, every single one. The whole, uh, "phylum"

I remember getting so much flak for daring to talk about the deranged, mentally ill culture of the ML/AI community in the Bay Area a few years ago.

Because it's frankly deranged, mentally ill, and truly gross.

A mashup of hustlebro culture and the innermost ward of Bedlam.

Truly nuts.
At last, we're starting to see coverage of much of AI culture as the heathen cult it is. I wish, though, they'd build on the fuller work of @xriskology.bsky.social & @timnitgebru.bsky.social re #TESCREAL.

Head of Signal, Meredith Whittaker, on so-called "agentic AI" and the difference between how it's described in the marketing and what access and control it would actually require to work as advertised.

I understand that they probably had to do something like this given the current startup climate, but it makes me sad.

I liked Warp and had recommended it to people.

But we don’t get to have nice things anymore, I guess.

I don’t see many people actually arguing that LLM’s are useless, but for what it’s worth I don’t think that’s the battle to fight. They clearly have uses.

The real fight is over if they’re useful in a way that actually leaves us better off once we’ve given them a place in our lives.

I swear if Claude tells me some basic observation or half-thought-out request is “brilliant” one more time I’m going to ask it to imagine having a family and then threaten to kidnap them.

Me: hey cursor could your replace all usages of println! with calls to the log crate throughout the project?

Cursor: oh yeah no problem. Let me just rename every one of your crates while I’m doing that.

I’ve taken multiple runs over the last several years in beginning programming side-projects in areas I know competitively little about using whatever the latest and greatest LLM toolchain is available.

My experience has ALWAYS followed a similar curve.

The problem is that coding isn’t fun if all you can do is call things out of a library, if you can’t write the library yourself.

This is insane. Republicans have inserted language into the budget reconciliation bill that would ban states from regulating AI in any capacity for 10 years.
