Chomsky's prominence despite his lack of seriousness to put it lightly said a lot how movements that indulged him preferred narrative simplism over confronting injustice wherever it comes from in a complex world
East Europeans getting troves of validation for hating on Chomsky and US people who blindly venerated him, despite genocide denial.

I know a teacher who was recommending Catcher in the Rye to her students until recently and was disappointed they all seemed to not like it. She was trying to come up with some grand theory to explain it, when really it’s just not that good, it just used to have very little competition in its genre.

Macron didn't concede anything in private messages to Trump, but the US Right is so high on delusional hubris that even basics of diplomatic back channels are useless as means to achieve stable outcomes.

How do you de-escalate with a US government that is obsessed with performative escalation?

Tomorrow, the Russian invasion of Ukraine will reach 1,418 days, the exact same number of days as the German invasion of the Soviet Union, from the border crossing on June 22nd to the official proclamation of Victory on May 9th and capitulation of Berlin.

Perfect Tom Stoppard story from DTel obituary:

His response to a letter from Harold Pinter canvassing support for a proposal to have the Comedy Theatre in London rechristened the Pinter Theatre, “Have you thought, instead, of changing your name to Harold Comedy?”

What folks need to realize about "peace talks" is that this is all theater for Washington. Ukraine knows that Russia has no intention of stopping the war, and the Russians know the Ukrainians know that. So this is just all a performance for Trump, hoping he blames the other for the lack of peace.

Of course there are many Russians that opposed the invasion of Ukraine and some that have pushed back against Putin. But military attacks and atrocities at this scale are not the act one man alone. They need the tacit, even enthusiastic, support of tens of millions of people.

I adore London&fully agree on Dubai, but the author‘s criticism of Paris& Berlin is a joke. French political turmoil is bad is it? Have you watched UK news since 2014? German trains are slow? Thank God for the sound state of UK Infrastructure.
Love you 🇬🇧. But ditch the superiority complex. Please.

OK, let's take this seriously. I had an odd half an hour and via Apple Books had a quick look at the three claims I knew most about - two re the post-Brexit bilateral preferential trade agreements replicated from the EU versions and one about cheaper bananas. All are wrong or wildly implausible. 1/n

Specifically around casual dining, a lot have been "invested" in by Private Equity, who want their return for the pension pots they serve. Casual high street dining is now competing with quite simply better restaurants for similar price points
The £100 ‘Bill Shock’ in high street restaurants. What happens when a once affordable treat – at Wagamama/Bill’s/Pizza Express etc – becomes a luxury?
I have investigated…🧵
