Eyes on Hong Kong. A huge fire broke out in a set of high-density residential flats in Tai Po, with fire still spreading through the bamboo scaffolding.

🪦In Mount Kōya one can find Okunoin, the largest cemetery of Japan, where giant conifers stand next to thousands of tombs and a mausoleum. The place is also infamous for its revisionism in memorials to Japanese soldiers and officials during WW2

☸️Kōya is a small town in the mountains south of Osaka. Full of temples and monasteries, it serves as the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism and a pilgrimage destination. Many temples here are specialised in hosting visitors

Yesterday we had a special #MonkeyCruise stream in honor of Jane Goodall! Her contributions to primatology and our understanding of animal intelligence changed the worldview of whole generations and her caring and critical voice will be missed.

The night sky is not the only marvel of the Atacama Desert.

One example? The Licancabur volcano, one of the great gatekeepers of ALMA. 5920 m high, it‘s part of a chain of mountains that separate Chile and Bolivia 🌋

1/ A telescope fist bump in the sky 🤜 🤛

Our Unit Telescopes combine their light with interferometry to obtain the level of detail of a huge 130 m virtual telescope. But this requires correcting the effects of Earth’s atmosphere. This is where the lasers come in.

I just love painting bird of prey. Their power, intensity and sleek beauty are too hard to resist. Here are some watercolor paintings of a few species I made, the goshawk, the gyrfalcon and the peregrine falcon.

The first of a paleoart series I'm calling "Perspectives," which aims to highlight the evolution of life on Earth with a variety of different creatures and styles.

This one is "Pale First Dot," depicting good ol' LUCA, the last universal common ancestor.
