For people not aware, Lemuria is a spec evo project of the #paleostream community. It follows the evolution of organisms living on the fictional continent of Lemuria (fusion of Madagascar and India) from the Cretaceous to the Pleistocene. We are in the Oligocene #LemuriaChallenge

shelter underground, but not everyone has access to a burrow. Long legged noasaurs and gondwanathers are a common sight in this biome. Their calls are a warning sign of incoming danger, heeded by almost everyone.

As we leave the forests behind the landscapes becomes increasingly open and dry. The bushlands of Lemuria are therefore under threat of wildfires during the dry season of the year. This threat is more feared than any predator. Those who can't run or fly away will try to take...

The Flashing Scallop Nun was one of my own submissions for this phase and was a means to show what information we require from contributors but also to put a hard cap on the maximum size of land animals. ;)

lures in a lot of other herbivores that consume this low vegetation in the shadow of these giants. The few large tree species that grow here all belong to the genus Wollemia, which has found ways to cope with the constant harassment.

Dust flies and wood breaks under the titanic efforts of two Scallop Nuns, the largest land animals of Lemuria. Their home are the open woodlands, which they formed in part themselves as they constantly topple smaller trees. This open up the landscape for grasses and ferns and...

🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Stratodus apicalis

What the...? From Late Cretaceous to Early Eocene (yup, freak survived the K-Pg) "stratosphere tooth" is a 5 meter aulopiform fish with an eel-like body covered in scutes and over 6000 conical teeth, 1000 of which grew outside its jaws!

Unfortunately my reconstruction as well as many others make the mistake to interpret parts of the pectoral girdle as forward facing spines, @seismic-shrimp.bsky.social thankfully put a more up to date interpretation on Wikipedia.

Preview of my latest #paleoart piece: a baby bison flees the deadliest predator of Ice Age Europe. Harrowing, harrowing stuff.

Crocodilians venture rarely into this realm of moss and fog and so large carnivore niches are all filled by mammals, in this case a large marsupial patrols it's territory, looking for prey maybe in the shape of a large rail?

To cool off we leave the tropics and enter the Temperate Pluvial Forests to the south of Lemuria. Between ancient trees we come across a fantastic sight, as a mixed herd of noasaurids and large multituberculates come to the shore of a small stream to drink.

Note that we got some taxa into this piece by making them being transported by army ants. Ants are an incredibly important part of modern day ecosystems, they probably consume more biomass than even humans and in turn many species rely on them.

From the canopy high above we fall into the leaf litter. Lemuria has a huge diversity of countless small critters from all sorts of clades. Here, at the edge of tropical rainforest we take a glimpse at some of them.

As you can see large gondwanathers, multis, noasaurids and simosuchids are among the large herbivores but that pales to the other, over 60 species we canonized in here.
