🪦In Mount Kōya one can find Okunoin, the largest cemetery of Japan, where giant conifers stand next to thousands of tombs and a mausoleum. The place is also infamous for its revisionism in memorials to Japanese soldiers and officials during WW2

🕷️The shrine is dedicated to the deity Inari, represented by a fox. The paths of the shrine cross the forested mountain, which to me looked like a jungle
Among the torii one can see many big spiders. Signs also warned of encounters with boars and macacques

⛩️Photos of Fushimi Inari, the Kyoto Shinto shrine famous for its hundreds of torii (the red gates) that form tunnels through the Inari mountain. While overcrowded at the start, it gets more empty when ascending the mountain

🎎The first night we visited the Gion district and the surroundings of the Kamo river. A couple of days later we came back to the district to watch a sample of the local arts at the Gion corner

🚅After the first part of the trip in the mountains we travelled by train to Kyoto, being welcomed to the city by the Kyoto Tower. The day of arrival we visited Tō-ji, a buddhist temple with the country's highest pagoda and some impressive statues inside pavilions

🐔🌩️A common sight in Tateyama is the local subspecies of rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta), also known there are thunder bird. This bird was revered as messenger of the gods and features in local art
We were also weary of bears, but didn't see any

🌄The next morning the Sun was shining, so at least we could enjoy some pretty views before returning to the lowlands.
In retrospective, we were a reckless by continuing our hike, which could have ended up badly. Lesson learnt, do not underestimate the mountain!

🏔️Hiking in Tateyama. The mountain, reaching 3000m high, was covered in beautiful autumn colours. Unfortunately, during most of the hike we were surrounded by a cloud, with little visibility and ending up completely soaked after 6h in the rain

🌌The night sky is beautiful in the mountain. We could see the Milky Way, the Pleiades and many constellations, as well as some planets. The photos have lower quality though

🐻When hiking through Japan's forests one must be careful with bears, especially in autumn, as they are most active. This year has been particularly deadly, with 13 people dead by bear attacks. It is recommended to make noise when walking in nature tl alert them

🗼I spent the first day of the trip in Tokyo. Still adjusting to the jet lag, I visited the Jimbōchō district (known for its bookstores), ate some nutritious chankonabe and went to a karaoke with my friends
