Bill Hader on his cinephilia: ‘I went to sleepovers & people thought we were watching porn but we were watching Taxi Driver & I was studying the shots.
I said ‘See? This is a subjective camera move’ No one else was interested.’
This is verrry relatable.

See also: the colleague who told me that when she worked for Crystal Cruises she had to respond to every customer request with “That would be my Crystal pleasure.”
People keep talking about getting the Gen Z stare from staff in shops but I’d rather that than the brief period in the early nineties when Burger King staff were compelled by corporate dictate to respond to each order with a hearty “You got it!”.

I'm grateful, because *despite* the best efforts of GB News and so many of their ilk in media and in power, Britain is still a fantastic place to live: overwhelmingly decent, generous and kind, respectful of people's personal space in a way that might signal distance...

reposting this for all my promising writer friends
There’s another wave of author impersonators offering consultations/mentoring for a price. (I got one from “Claire Keegan” telling me I’m very promising!) I’m sure you are great, but I didn’t email to tell you how swell you are. Here’s info on book scams: www.penguinrandomhouse.com/prh-fraud/

would love to know the answer, too👇
Oh for sure.

I'm not sure what the difference is between brain diversity from having different lived experiences which have shaped how you handle things & being neurodiverse, where your cognitive functions are outside the norm. I think that's probably one for a therapist and they are too expensive

DOUGIE’S TUESDAY TIP

Take a scliff (for that is what it is called) of the Christmas Terry’s dark chocolate Orange each time you open the fridge door, then carefully rebuild the foil structure within the box to leave no trace of the theft. Replace Orange once a week until Christmas.

Imagine praising a book in 2025 for being "sparse"? Look I enjoy sparse prose as much as the next, but we've been in a decades long Sparse Race of prose that you can increasingly just inhale like a delicate mousse and at some stage we will have to start making adjectives cool again

It’s Claude Rains’ birthday
Do yourself a favour and watch James Whale’s The Invisible Man.
The sfx still hold up admirably but the greatest special effect is Rains’ truly demented & disturbing performance as Jack Griffin, relying almost totally on that wonderful voice…
