Over the past century and a half, the US military has developed an entire body of law relating to the legitimate use of force that Hegseth completely erases here. To most in the armed forces, it is important to have a code of ethics (no matter how imperfect). Otherwise they are just hired killers.
Hegseth: "We unleash overwhelming and punishing violence on the enemy. We also don't fight with stupid rules of engagement. We untie the hands of our warfighters to intimidate, demoralize, hunt, and kill the enemies of our country. No more politically correct and overbearing rules of engagement."

One early morning in Feb ‘04 outside of Fallujah I was next to a then MAJ who called in AC-130 fires so close to our position that we were pelted with debris from the target building. That now 4⭐️ had to fly in from Europe to listen to Pete talk about Lethality™️ and standards.

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

I figured out that the thing that has been bumming me out about The Political Situation is how luridly fake and cheap every ostensibly august institution and tradition has revealed itself to be. Whatever they might be or were supposed to be, they all just work however the shitheads in charge want.
