Voluntarily severed ex-Professor of Bacteriology dabbling in creative things (music [C÷M, gigs looming], images, writing [a silly children’s story & a sketchbook about old Lancashire towns]). From Chorley (originally). craigwinstanley.online

The ideal Xmas gift if you’re not sure what to get for someone (probably, almost certainly, I’d say…)

Special relationship going well this morning, I see. Kissing the purulent orange rear really working. Well worth the national humiliation.

There’s a special place in Hell for university vice chancellors.
'Nottingham Trent University – which reported a £2 million deficit – paid its departing vice-chancellor Edward Peck a bonus of £66,000 in his last year in the job....Peck...received a total pay package of £435,000 in 2024-25 – up from £407,000 the year before.'
Vice-chancellor bonuses growing despite sector funding crisis
Universities defend decision to award some vice-chancellors larger bonuses than last year, with one private institution giving boss over £100K

Sociopath (or now ASPD): a persistent disregard for others' rights and feelings, a lack of empathy and remorse, manipulative behavior, impulsivity, and a failure to conform to social norms or laws, often using charm to exploit others for personal gain without guilt or regret.

Sound familiar..?

Bought this after reading something about it in @bylinetimes.bsky.social
Highly recommended. I’ve seen it described as “a taut, spare sociological novel about the emptiness of contemporary existence”.
So perfect for Christmas then!
(It is a satire & very well written)

TLDR: The REF remains an awful exercise which holds back research, stresses researchers, and provides incentives for university administrators to interfere with and damage research.

The fact is no presenter has ever had to leave the BBC for expressing conservative views, or even explicitly endorsing a right-wing party.
