This is a medlar, which ranks amongst the oddest fruits I’ve ever even. The medlar ripens through a process called bletting. My neighbor has a medlar tree and gave us a half-dozen ripe fruits today. What does it taste like, you might ask? About the way the inside looks and it’s an acquired taste.

"A Copse, Evening" by Alexander Young Jackson, 1918, #CanadianWarMuseum.

This infernal scene was familiar to an entire generation of British and Commonwealth #soldiers in the #GreatWar. A noted landscape artist, the painter created his #war art from personal experience. #fww #fwwhist #Passchendaele

Please keep my niece in your thoughts. She was airlifted to a trauma center with her partner about an hour ago. They were involved in a head-on collision on US-60 in western Kentucky about an hour ago. I live in wedtern Oregon and may be flying east tomorrow based on the situation.
KYTC: Crash blocks U.S. 60 in Livingston County
A crash in Livingston County has blocked U.S. 60 in both directions near mile marker 25, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 1 said in an alert.

Sgt William A. Hartman, , Co F, 107th Engineers, 32nd Div, AEF, by Joseph Cummings Chase, 1919, #NAMH.

The portrait is one of a series of #DSC winners the artist created for the #USArmy after the #GreatWar. Like so much #FWW art, it is not of public display. #combatart #fwwhist #combatengineer

"The Working Party", 1917, by Richard Tennant Cooper 1918, #NAM

Depictions of night combat are especially powerful. Hardly any frontline photos taken at night exist from the #GreatWar. Therefore, we must rely on artists’ work to show us this aspect of the soldier’s life. #fwwhist #fww #WesternFront

"A Tommy wearing rain cape and carrying picket posts," 1917 by Richard Tennant Cooper, 1918 © National Army Museum.

I love the atmospherics in this sketch. It hearkens to the labour that was a never-ending part of the soldier’s life in the #GreatWar. #LabourCorps #fwwhist #ww1 #WesternFront

You’ve been kidnapped. The characters from the last TV show you watched are coming to rescue you. Who is coming to save you?

Answer: Alex Levy from The Morning Show

Reading about the #WW1 British Army, I see quote a few unit battalion designations like the one in this screen grab. What does a battalion numbered 2/15, 1/3, etc., mean exactly? @fourteeneighteen.co.uk @sommephantom.bsky.social

Take a half hour out of your time to watch this short film about the young men who went to war in Bomber Command. I was more than misty-eyed by the end.

What really hit me was the comments. There’s still a well of sorrow for all of the brave young men who died in their heavies. #airwar

“Neptune’s Inferno” by the late James Hornfischer. One of the finest naval history books ever published. This story puts you on signal bridges, inside gun turrets, and deep in ships during some of the most desperate sea combat of #WW2. #booksky #USNavy #PacificWar

It’s been almost a year since I lost my best friend. Just yesterday I received the renewal for his licence for the county animal control authority. It brought back how much I miss him.

So the holidays are coming right up. Do yourself a favour. Either gift yourself these two books, or get somebody who loves you to get them for you.

The amount of information in “Zero Hour Z Day 1&2” is astonishing. If you’re interested in how the #BritishArmy fought on the #Somme, these are it.

There’s a good article about shell shock in vol. 4, iss. 20 of "Salient Points." I’m a bit confused about para 1. Is the author saying #WW1 shell shock was a different from PTS. I’ve read it through several times and that’s what I’m getting. Also, I think about TBI.

"With Manton's Guns, Hill 60, August 1917" by Will Dyson, #NMAH.

#Australian illustrator Will Dyson ranks among my favourite war artists. His drawings of the Australian Imperial Force on the #WesternFront are both evocative and powerful.
