Last week, the US military missed an actual drug boat in the Pacific carrying 13.2 tons of narcotics, which Panama seized—one of the largest hauls to date. Instead of blowing it out of the water, 10 suspects were arrested, and valuable intelligence was gathered. What a concept.

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was lost 50 years ago today — around the time Gordon Lightfoot was at work on a new album.

An experienced Great Lakes sailor who knew those waters well, he later told NPR he was surprised that media coverage gave “short shrift for such a monumental event.”

The average US taxpayer spends $36 a year on SNAP

You know what they spend on corporate subsidies? $670

Poor and disabled people who need food are not the problem

If you’re angry about “your money” feeding people but not angry it’s giving tax cuts to the wealthy?

You’re doing their dirty work.

We’re in week five of the Republican government shutdown.

The number of negotiating sessions that Congressional Republicans have been willing to have? Exactly zero.

They would rather shut down the government than help the American people afford health care and food.
