The passing of Catherine O’Hara is such an awful shock. She was comedy fire in absolutely everything she was in (we had only just finished THE STUDIO — where she has a beautiful parting line to Rogen’s Matt Remick — the night before waking up to this sad news). Vale to a true great. 💔😔

As Chandler Bing might say, could the titles of these AACTA award-nominated films *be* the most Australian titles ever?

Today would have been the 80th birthday of the brilliant dreamer and filmmaker, David Lynch.

Watched THE NEST again last night, and not only does it remain a great film about the fragile masculinity that lay at the heart of high finance bloodsuckers, but the way Carrie Coon’s pitch-perfect performance was completely blanked during the 2021 award season remains a blight on our society.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYBODY! A day late but hopefully not a dollar short, here is my wrap-up of 2025 for Cinema Viscera and my year in film: www.cinemaviscera.com/blog/2025-in...

Happy New Year, Viscerals! I know I say this every year, but this year seemed particularly exhausting. It's been kind of wild in many ways, with stuff I can talk about and stuff I can't, but it felt.....

Does anyone else ever wonder why, in the music video for the Backstreet Boys' "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)", everyone looks like a giant dork except the vampire, whose shots and makeup look genuinely good and are actually lit like a horror movie? It's always puzzled me.

No? Just me? Okay, then.

The only word that's wrong in this post is "basically".

THIS IS SPINAL TAP is the perfect comedy film. As he goes on to say, it has every kind of comedy inside it - it's smart/dumb, verbal/visual, character/situational, slapstick/witty - and somehow remains relevant to every band, before & since.
Watching the best of the Rob Reiner filmography over the weekend and started with TIST because of course I did. It's basically a perfect comedy. You already knew this but I think it's worth repeating. It's basically a perfect comedy.

Gutted by the senseless murder of Rob and Michele Reiner. The guy made the best ever comedy film, my #1 rom-com, 2 of the top 5 @stephenking.bsky.social adaptations, 2 of the 3 best Sorkin films and THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Not to mention his tireless activism, and he seemed like a lovely man. Vale. 💔😔

Perhaps it’s just that I’m locked in the POV of my own working-hard-but-hardly-working life as an indie filmmaker, but the thing I find most fascinating about auteurs like Hong Sang-Soo (and his going back further, RW Fassbinder) is… where do they get their financing? Who’s paying for all that work?

As someone who’s known a few folks who’ve ran, or worked at, indie bookshops, this is absolutely true.
I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

So my car has a CD player, and I keep just one disc in there, 24/7, for moments when I don’t have a podcast cued up, or don’t feel like one, or if Bluetooth’s glitchy.

This CD’s job is to be the NFL Kicker of albums; it’s rarely on field, but whenever it’s required, it hits with deadly accuracy.

I can vouch for this! Drew gave excellent feedback and was generous with his time, all for very reasonable rates, esp. considering the man’s written and read more scripts than you’ve had hot dinners. If you’re after thoughtful, incisive notes on your script with an eye to industry, give him a hire!
Earlier this year, I decided to offer script notes and consultations for the first time. Why would anyone pay me for that? Well, I've spent the last 35 years in LA as a writer, and I've worked all sides of this equation.
