Fences

The first panel depicts two pronghorns, stopped at a fence, while Mariella narrates offscreen: Animals with hooves can't follow the footsteps of their grandparents, it's harder for people too. Even that tricky coyote got caught. The screen cuts back to Mariella, who is helping Rusty climb the fence. Mariella: We can walk right underneath it. That makes us lucky, I suppose. Rusty: It just keeps going? Mariella: I've never seen the end. Maybe it goes way out to the ocean? I've never seen the ocean either. What do I know? Rusty is helping Mariella off the top of the fence and onto a twisty juniper tree. The two then sit on the branch and watch the sunset. Rusty: Don't say that. You teach me something every day. Mariella: Well, the sun sets all the same no matter the side of the fence. It'll set once it rots to rust too.
