Amid growing calls for the abolition of ICE, Rep. Delia Ramirez is calling for the entire DHS to be dismantled. Highlighting how much experience the officers who killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti had, Ramirez said, “DHS was built to violate our rights and has been empowered to act with impunity.”
House Democrat Says Abolishing ICE Isn’t Enough — DHS Must Go, Too
“The problem isn’t ‘training.’ DHS was built to violate our rights,” said Rep. Delia C. Ramirez.

We only know about a lot of the ways mass surveillance has been used because of public records requests by reporters & community groups.

Cops & surveillance companies are obscuring info on use.

And, WA state legislature is working on a bill SB 6002 to exempt surveillance data from public records
NEW: Police officers are being told to “be as vague as permissible” about why they are using the Flock surveillance system in order to not leak sensitive information via public records requests, according to records obtained using a public records request.
Police Told to Be ‘as Vague as Permissible’ About Why They Use Flock
The documents show law enforcement sees themselves as being consistently and universally under threat from the people it is supposed to protect.

So many people in the Twin Cities are physically and emotionally scarred by what has been happening there. Still, going out with a broken rib is remarkable. He must have been in severe pain and still decided to step in to help someone.
CNN reporting that a week before Alex Pretti was killed, 5 agents tackled him and he suffered a broken rib. CNN says he stopped his car after he saw ICE agents interacting with a family on foot and began to blow his whistle. Source tells CNN Pretti believed “That day he thought he was going to die”

This is not a new doctrine, this is why Ca has the Mulford Act and why Reagan signed it.

Also, the primary purpose of law enforcement body cams, functionally speaking, will always be the surveillance and criminalization of members of the public, not law enforcement themselves. Extraordinary exceptions confuse people about this.

Political Scientists would call it a "tactical concession" (RRS' Spiral Model). Human rights and democracy campaigners need to make sure it leads to more gains (positive spiral) instead of stalling progress (negative spiral).
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

Once again it looks like Schumer is about to choke after getting a massive opportunity.

So pathetic and weak.
