The South African health minister who promoted “treating” HIV with beetroot juice and garlic instead of anti-retrovirals is estimated to have caused 300,000 deaths.
“As a measles outbreak expands in West Texas, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health and human services secretary, on Tuesday cheered several unconventional treatments, including cod liver oil, but again did not urge Americans to get vaccinated.”

In an interview, the H.H.S. secretary claimed that unconventional treatments were helping patients but did not mention vaccination.

Friday was my last day working at 18F. It was a team of extraordinary people, but a few things happened that made me realize I had to leave.

Everything happens so much these days, so I thought I’d write down for myself what happened, and how I made my decision:

I had a wonderful job, until I didn’t. This is about what happened—and what is happening.

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

The first measles death in the US in a decade -- the tragic, preventable death of a child whose parents chose not to protect them with vaccination -- should spark an immediate nation-wide campaign to ensure all children are protected against preventable diseases. Anything less is unconscionable.

It would be fantastic if major federal institutions would acknowledge that the executive branch cannot legally unilaterally cancel or redistribute congressionally appropriated funding on ideological grounds and thus they have no legal obligation to comply with such directives

one thing I'm pretty sure of (though not from direct experience) is that if you somehow do the nazi salute by accident, & you're not a nazi, your reaction is more like "oh god what just happened, I'm mortified, I'm so sorry" than "I'll do it again if I want"

just saying

Once again, a gaslighting of what it was like. I found the leadership of tech to be very conservative even if their employees were not
Making my way through the Andreessen interview. A few immediate reactions…

He asserts that Silicon Valley in 1994 was all Clinton-Gore Dems.

…Tell that to George Gilder, Newt Gingrich, Louis Rossetto, and the Progress and Freedom Foundation.

The Ayn Rand tradition runs pretty deep.

Actual smart people see being able to not double down, being able to admit error or lack of knowledge, as smart behavior. They respect a person *more* for saying "I don't know"

People who only want to appear smart, never seem to do any of this.
