I wrote about the importance of tools that bring different platforms and protocols together and how I believe that's the future of an open social web owned by people, not platforms.

Bridges & The Last Network Effect
We don't have to enclose ourselves in walls of our own making or force users to understand the nuances of every platform and protocol. It's time to give people tools that empower them to make decision...

Until CSS, all websites had to be colored in with pencil crayons
Until JavaScript all Java was passed down via oral tradition
Until Objective C, all code was pointless, random. The big innovation was having a goal with it

Any bloggers / internet publishers interested in bringing existing content onto atproto?

If you'd find it valuable to add social web features, like comments / discovery / subscribe via atproto, to your site, lmk

I'd love to hear from indie blog folks, but also larger sites or collectives!

Crazy that at one point the conversation around LLMs was the slow death of existing tech giants. In the end, all it's going to do is entrench the incumbents even further.

I've been calling ATProto's data ownership "the everything account" when explaining it to newer folks 🙂
“the everything app” is a stupid, hopeless, harmful, no good, toxic, impossible idea

“the everything ecosystem” is good, natural, resilient, attractive, sustainable, achievable, and currently within reach thanks to @atproto.com

Did you know we have a subscription lexicon ? Documentation coming soon.
I’ll make a real post about this later, but you can now subscribe to blogs on @pckt.blog using the @standard.site subscription lexicon, and read posts from the blogs you’re following at read.pckt.blog

I'm not even sure I'd describe the discussion as problems. These are just different product strategies.

Shared identity doesn't inherently mean shared social graphs, and there are good reasons for connecting to an ecosystem or not, depending on what you're trying to accomplish.
The hardest part of building a social app is bootstrapping a social network.

There are benefits to having distinct social graphs but IMO you are also making the hard part harder.

I think people are taking a principled stance on a practical issue. There is more than one solution to this problem.

Circles was the right concept built on top of the wrong ecosystem
We talk about importing social graphs and at the same time many of us also keep thinking about eg Google Circles and the general difficulty of maintaining different degrees of friendship/maintaining/presenting different facets of personality.

From my perspective, the ATProto social graph would be more useful as a "find your friends" across apps, not necessarily auto-follow.

Rather than sending all your contacts to every app, you can choose which of your apps to "recommend" follows from.
So, theoretical atproto service: “Omnifollow”. For those of us who prefer one social graph.

Sign in and grant it repo:* access. It watches the firehose. If you follow someone on service A, it autofollows them on any other service that you both use, e.g. you both have profile records for the service

Good thing they re-based their whole design language across all their popular devices on a device that no one actually wants, even though it makes no sense in any other context
