Parole.

I’ve been interested in Arabic lettering design and was wondering if it could be expressed in urushi.
Just then, the latest issue of the Japanese design magazine idea turned out to be a special feature on Arabic calligraphy — so I bought it right away!

I reckon it could. There’s a lot of Arabic and Persian calligraphy for homewares and a lot of it is done in gold and similar lacquers and inks. Often see stuff like this at the markets near where we used to live here in Sydney due to the large Arab population.

I didn’t know that at all😅
This book also features various works that incorporate Arabic calligraphy.

Because it’s against Islamic law to depict images of prophet Muhammad, and it’s become quite culturally normal to have verses from the Quran adorning one’s home, there’s a lot of this art around. They take calligraphy very seriously.

Kintsugi fundamentally involves repairing broken or chipped items, and deliberately breaking them is out of the question. Moreover, adding kintsugi-like lines to a piece carefully crafted by a ceramist is a desecration of the artist's work. I also do not like items printed with kintsugi patterns.

Even where the skills and materials for kinsugi are beyond reach or awareness, or unaffordable, people have sought to repair prized family heirlooms.

Mini: Kintsugi
Kinsugi is a Japanese tradition of repairing broken things rather than retiring them, and in doing so making them stronger. It has a nice metaphor for personal, social, and economic issues. Great work Takuo.

In my own corner of the world, I’ve started doing kintsugi-inspired dust jacket repairs on (really tattered, torn, unredeemable) covers as conversation pieces, and a way to pass some time in silent contemplation.
