That we can do this is incredible.
RNA sequencing revealed which of the woolly mammoth Yuka's genes were active when it died: "In the creature’s final panicked moments, its muscles were tensing and its cells were signaling distress—perhaps unsurprising since Yuka is thought to have died as a result of a cave lion attack." 🧪

I get very annoyed at people who go “taxonomically, whales are fish (because all tetrapods are part of the sarcopterygian fishes)”. Great! You’re technically correct. But calling whales “fish” is not actually *useful*. In real life, as opposed to phylogeny fairyland, the distinction has a meaning.

I have said in the past that transphobia has replaced fox hunting as the British elite’s recreational sadism bonding activity, but it seems I counted out the gentleman’s sport too soon - in lieu of foxes they’ve switched to the most dangerous game.

I made a pretty okay beef mussaman curry/stew! I was feeling the lack of red meat in my diet recently and this certainly helps.

Jesus. Some delightful person has decided that November 14th is the perfect night to let off fireworks. Hurrah for Canterbury Anniversary Day I guess???

I’m beginning to think I should get myself a sewing machine. So I can actually work on things at home when I can’t be bothered going down to the library.

I am 100% sure that if I hang around sewists long enough someone’s going to offer me their old machine. It’s already happened three times.

A government which actually cared about efficiency and saving money would fund UBI, universal healthcare, and housing first initiatives … because they’ve been proven, time and again, to save money.

Long ago on the hell site I made long list of historically interesting things to use in dnd ttrpgs and I'll start dragging them over here starting with

2000 years-old sapphire ring presumably belonged to Roman emperor Caligula, depicting his fourth wife Caesonia.

Tomorrow I’m planning to go investigate the new fabric store (my mother says it has good deals on technically-upholstery-but-you-can-use-it-for-garments fabric), maybe do some more sewing, maybe get to the hardware store for synthetic chamois, maybe glue some earrings together.

I don’t often find myself majorly inconvenienced by not having a car, but today is an exception. The bus was so late, and traffic was so bad, that I missed my connection and as a result had to skip my craft group. By the time I got there it would have been basically over.

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

Holy hell. I am … appalled. I’d say “the scream I scrumpt” except it’s more of a dejected groan. I thought the issue lay with America’s “No Child Left Behind” program, but this is horrifying. The rot is deeper.

Sewing projects I want to try:

- glasses case
- yukata/summer dressing gown
- wraparound skirt but with waist tie, more drapey.
- pleated skirt
- IDK maybe a t-shirt

I have finished doing the basting stitches to hold my waistband onto my skirt, which took like two hours … now all I have to do is actually sew it on.
