He’s been out of parliament before so it’s possible … but I think he intends to stay in office until he dies, like an American gerontocrat. Which shows where his priorities are because the public good is not served by turning the Beehive into a private retirement village.

Of course none of this addresses her fiction, and historically “being a bad person” is hardly a disqualifier for being an SF grand master. I personally didn’t like her books, but I recognise I’m in the minority there.

One of the first things I did on Bluesky was block Jemisin, because I didn’t feel safe with her able to see my posts. Sure, I’m a nobody, but that just means I’m a vulnerable target if the roulette wheel of the two-minute transphobic hate happens to land on me.

Also, some people really enjoy being righteously angry and don’t care who it’s aimed at so long as they get their fix - and those people are particularly dangerous to queer people, because who cares about your victims when you’re riding that high?

What the whole debacle taught me is that proud progressives love a transphobic hate mob just as much as any fascist, they just require a few more hoops jumped through first. Usually one of us transing her gender wrong is enough.

Winston is up there. He’s definitely the one most invested in pushing American ideological agendas (“culture war” issues) like institutional transphobia.

I would like to see more human armies that aren’t shackled to the grip of the Imperium though, because of all the fascism and the fascists who like the Imperium unironically. I want ramshackle cyborg space pirates, I think they’d work in 40K.
