The thing to understand about "age verification" laws is that they are not just for kids

The only way to "stop kids from doing xyz online" using age-gating is to demand a government ID (or invasive biometric face scan) from EVERYONE.

This means associating your gov ID with EVERYTHING YOU DO ONLINE

Mandatory online age authentication makes almost everyone worse off--except age authentication vendors, who will celebrate their concern about children's welfare at their black-tie industry awards gala + after-party (seats cost 250£ & up; photos cost extra) 🤮

Really great coverage from @wired.com about our week of action against online ID verification and how these bills are setting a dangerous precedent by making the internet more exploitative rather than safer.

The Age-Gated Internet Is Sweeping the US. Activists Are Fighting Back
Half of the country now requires age verification to watch porn or access “harmful” content. Digital rights advocates are pushing back against legislation they say will make the internet less safe.

Broad Censorship is wrong & only part of the playbook of the fascists to drag us into a Policed State where all forms of self-expression, joy, individuality & social equality is gone.
Congress is attempting to fast track KOSA and more than a dozen bills that would restrict internet access, censor speech and increase surveillance under the guise of protecting children.

Committee hearings begin tomorrow.
Lawmakers to consider 19 bills for childproofing the internet
KOSA is back, along with more than a dozen other bills that will erode free speech and privacy in the name of protecting kids.

hi! this is really bad! this is something the government has been trying to do for 10+ years since the SESTA/FOSTA era under the guise of protecting kids from porn or whatever sisyphean task they invented to cover up the fact that this is a major way to control and close up our internet access
While KOSA has taken up much of the attention in kids online safety discussions, a bill mandating app stores conduct age verification has been sweeping states and Congress. It will be discussed at tomorrow's House hearing, and just picked up Pinterest as a supporter www.theverge.com/policy/83087...
A nationwide internet age verification plan is sweeping Congress
The bill takes aim at Apple and Google’s app stores.

As I mentioned in a blog post on Sunday, November 30, KOSA, SCREEN and all other bills like it do absolutely nothing to protect children.

All these bills are designed to do one thing and one thing only: completely destroy the US Constitution.
