Not rare knowledge, but in Everquest NPCs like merchants or quest givers wouldn't interact with you when your faction standing was below a threshold. You could get around this even for hostile NPCs if you were a rogue, monk, ranger, bard, or halfling of any class by sneaking and standing behind them

I had just finished a math degree and had some close friends from attending Phoenix IGDA meetings. One said "You should come work with us, we're using this new engine Unity [2.0 alpha]. We can pay you in shredded newspaper and broken dreams [money, just not much]." Sounded pretty good.

Generative A.I., the thing that drives our whole economy right now, is a perfect metaphor for the abject failure of imagination on the part of the powerful. Generative A.I. has no imagination and offers no new insights. It's a mere predictive engine that uses statistics to find the most likely next thing. What's the next word in a sequence, the next pixel in a picture? This is the opposite of imagination, which is so often about finding the least likely thing, the startling incongruity. I worry that so many of us are outsourcing our imaginations and our whole creative selves to these stochastic parrots.

And that's what these guys are, these guys that marched in Charlottesville, these are the people who are aware of the unspoken premise of this sort of zombie neoliberalism that we're living in, which is that we're coming to a point where there's gonna be ecological catastrophe, and that it's gonna require either massive redistribution of the ill-gotten gains of the first world, or genocide. And these are the first people who have basically said, "Well if that's the choice, then I choose genocide", ", and they're getting everyone else ready, intellectually and emotionally, for why that's gonna be okay when it happens, why they're not really people. When we're putting all this money into more fucking walls and drones and bombs and guns to keep them away, so that we can watch them die with clear consciences, it's because we've been loaded with the ideology that these guys are now starting to express publicly.

Playing games for reference (usually mechanical / feel) is one of my favorite parts of the process. It is not the same fun as playing them for play's sake. But it's neat to sort of academically dissect what's working vs. not. Most of that in preprod / prototype, but I try to come back to them often.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
