The people were on our side. We were building momentum to help save our democracy. We could have won - the premium increase notices were just starting.
And giving in now will embolden him. Things will likely get worse.

Not the main point here (that’s the craven cowardice in the face of lawless authoritarianism & being totally wrong here), but it is worth mentioning, since everyone is going to rail at “The Democrats,” that Angus King left the Democratic Party…32 years ago & continues not to be a member of it.

seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

It was a coordinated effort. I don’t think all the dems were for it, but many more than voted yes were.
KILMEADE: Schumer says he's voting no. Did you do this outside leadership?
SHAHEEN: No. We kept leadership informed throughout.

I'm looking to see not only which Senate Dem candidates oppose this surrender (all of them will) but also where they go beyond this with respect to senate leadership.
I want to see concrete promises for a new fighting Dem Party, because the current one is broken.

He is a computer safety researcher.
And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

Good questions
Was the possibility that Repubs would dig in and refuse to compromise because they don’t care about Dem priorities not considered before this began? If it was, was “calling attention to the issues” (the only thing achieved) worth doing this? Is a shutdown the only way to do that?

Ro Khanna calls for Schumer‘ ouster
We need to start by targeting Schumer to step down or resign. Then we can focus on midterms. Several up for reelection in 2026 supported this, but let the others take the fall.
I’m in no way saying both parties are the same, but we need real reform. Not more of the same soft belly politics.

Here’s the list of the eight Democrats who caved:
⚫️ Catherine Cortez Masto
⚫️ Dick Durbin
⚫️ John Fetterman
⚫️ Maggie Hassan
⚫️ Tim Kaine
⚫️ Angus King
⚫️ Jackie Rosen
⚫️ Jeanne Shaheen
Their excuses don’t hold water. They betrayed all Americans who were counting on them to stand firm and keep fighting.

You’re closer to a vote but no guarantees because you gave away our only leverage.
King: So I believe that we are closer tonight to a vote on the ACA tax credits than we were this morning. This agreement tonight is a win for the American people.

Shaheen: We have a guaranteed vote by a guaranteed date…
Reporter: There is no guarantee that this will become law.

SHUTDOWN TAKEAWAY: send home as many federal employees as you want, cut off people's food stamps, let health care system career towards a cliff, but don't mess with air travel, especially with holidays looming.
