I never realized, when I was a kid, that that was important.

That Picard, or Geordi, or Data, or Worf, were giving me life lessons.

That Data, who doesn't get jokes, or social cues, who works differently than anyone else, and who strives to mask?

She cherished the silence while it lasted, then allowed herself a smile when Rook spoke up again. “So, Captain, how’d it go?” “What did?” she asked as she returned the unused towels to their cabinet. “The date.” “I had fun,” she admitted. “Ngata—Maia,” she corrected herself, “took me to the Bellerophon Arm for a picnic and a swim in the canals.” Rook’s eyes, wide with interest, begged for elaboration. “We did five laps. We were hand in hand, but I ran out of breath towards the end and she won. Then we just sat on the park to dry off, talked about, uh, stuff. Then we went for drinks.” “Stuff?” “Work stuff, mostly,” she admitted. “The new samples came in, and Jardine’s preliminary report suggests that...” She could see their eyes glaze over before she even had a chance to go into details. With a roll of the shoulders, she pulled up a seat. “It wasn’t the kind of date you’re probably thinking about. More like a structured group activity but the group was Maia and I. And it was a great time. We chatted until the sunlights dimmed and it was like we could keep going until they lit up again. But—” “But it wouldn’t work out because of the whole NEV thing, yeah?” “It worked out exactly as we wanted it to.” “Ah.” “Anyway,” Yana rose to her feet and cracked her knuckles, “we’re on for another night out next time I visit Habitat, and I’ll get to pick the activity. We’ll see if she’s as good at badminton as she is at swimming. How’s the bleeding?” “I think it stopped?”
