Heard one singing yesterday!
🪶House Finches don't get a lot of ❤️ because they're common, but these familiar birds have a cheery song (listen to video below) that you'll start hearing a lot more soon. Male House Finches sing year-round, but not as much from Oct to Feb. We're starting to hear them sing again when the ☀️ shines.

Good news!
A concrete channel in Amazon Creek that runs from E 24th Ave to E 20th Ave has been almost fully transformed.

The restoration includes a natural sloped bank for increased flood water capacity, native plants for stormwater filtration, and a new pedestrian bridge.

When planning your native garden don't forget the annuals! They're easy going, and readily self seed filling gaps and suppressing weeds while providing a wealth of pollinator benefits. Here's a few PNW options!

Do you have any leftover holiday greenery? 🌲 Put those trees, wreaths, and garlands to use for the birds! Find out how you can create a winter refuge for birds this winter with a few simple suggestions: www.allaboutbirds.org/news/your-ch...
Your Christmas Trees and Holiday Wreaths Can Double as Bird Habitat

Before its final rest in the compost, our Christmas tree spends some time in the garden providing a bit of shelter for the birds. The House Sparrows appreciate the comfy roost near the feeder #birds

Greenland PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen:

"If we have to choose between the US & Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark. We choose NATO. We choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We choose the EU."

"Greenland does not want to be owned by the US. Greenland does not want to be governed by the US" he later added.

"...these ancient nun-mapped trails can teach us to embrace the sweetness of slowing down, the curative powers of nature and the simplicity of walking."
Italy's new nun-mapped pilgrim trail
As Italy grapples with overtourism, a series of ancient trails resurrected by nuns winds through the forgotten landscapes where Benedictine monasticism shaped medieval Europe.

I don't know this guy or live in his district, but I absolutely agree with him here. My Danish father lived in, worked in, and loved Greenland and the Greenlandic people. His time in Greenland shaped the rest of his life. He would be horrified to know what is happening now. #Greenland #Denmark
The White House says the U.S. military is “always an option” to take Greenland. That’s not strength—it’s reckless. Greenland isn’t ours. Denmark is our ally. Threatening allies destabilizes the world. Shut this down now. #CA32 #Greenland

Wreath I made to be bird friendly.
Natural materials, no baubles, no glue, no glitter. Wire ends tucked into the back. Juniper berries and fir cones as food sources, if birds find the wreath. #Birds

Dark-eyed Juncos have been found to be evolving to better adapt to urban environments. Specifically, there is a gene that gives higher tolerance to heavy metals (ABCB6) that is becoming more common in urban Juncos as compared to more wilderness-living Juncos. #birds #nature #science
