Tumblr user nocryptographer: I talked with someone who works in book publishing, and they mentioned they get a lot of AI slop these days. I asked how they know what's human-written, and they said that there's one thing that will reveal AI slop without error, and that's the author not knowing their own creation. A real author can talk about their story for hours. They love to elaborate every character, every twist, every detail. Because those existed in their head long before they ever made it to the paper. They were loved before they were written. AI slop wasn't. It was just vomited into existence. Someone who generates their story with AI will never bond with their story the way real writers do. That's why they may not know what to say when they're asked why did the character do this, or even remember the scene in the first place. It's something they read, not something they wrote. And to a writer, those are not the same. There's a unique bond between the creator and the creation. If your writing doesn't come of you, you'll always lack that. I keep hearing soon we won't be able to tell. And perhaps, in a superficial sense, that's true. But there is a difference. It's not em dashes or repeated words. It's whether the story was made by someone who loves it and cares about it. If the writer's eyes light up when asked why did the character do that? and they start their very own Ted Talk about that specific scene... then it's real.

Abstract: Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in the 21st with social media. For these collective blunders, we now regret our involvement or apathy as scientists, and society struggles to put the genie back in the bottle. Currently, we are similarly entangled with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. For example, software updates are rolled out seamlessly and non-consensually, Microsoft Office is bundled with chatbots, and we, our students, and our employers have had no say, as it is not considered a valid position to reject AI technologies in our teaching and research. This is why in June 2025, we co-authored an Open Letter calling on our employers to reverse and rethink their stance on uncritically adopting AI technologies. In this position piece, we expound on why universities must take their role seriously toa) counter the technology industry’s marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. We include pointers to relevant work to further inform our colleagues. Figure 1. In the case of proprietary closed source models, e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Apple’s Siri, we cannot verify their implementation and so academics can only make educated guesses (cf. Dingemanse 2025). Undefined terms used above: BERT (Devlin et al. 2019); AlexNet (Krizhevsky et al. 2017); A.L.I.C.E. Unverzeihliche Fehler Milliardenverschwendungen, Maskenberichte und Intransparenz – es ist schwer, einen Überblick über die zahlreichen Vorwürfe gegenüber Spahn zu gewinnen. Zeit also für die ultimative Liste: Was wird Spahn in Bezug auf die Corona-Zeit vorgeworfen? Milliardenverschwendung bei Maskenbeschaffung: Der Bundesrechnungshof wirft Jens Spahn vor, für einen Schaden von 517 Millionen Euro bei der Beschaffung von Masken im Open-House-Verfahren verantwortlich zu sein. Zudem bestehe ein Risiko von 2,3 Milliarden Euro. Das zeigt der von uns veröffentlichte Bericht. Massiv überteuerte und schlechte Masken: Spahn soll dafür gesorgt haben, dass das Gesundheitsministerium Masken zu stark überhöhten Preisen von bis zu 7 Euro bestellt hat. Preise von Masken soll er selbst hochgesetzt haben. Der Schaden: Mehrere Hundert Millionen Euro. Obwohl die Firma Emix massenhaft fehlerhafte Masken lieferte, zeigte sich Spahn nachgiebig. Das zeigt der ungeschwärzte Maskenbericht. Desolate Prozessstrategie: Durch die chaotische Beschaffung wurde Spahns Ministerium zigfach von Maskenhändlern verklagt. Dabei gab das Hunderte Millionen Euro in verlorenen Prozessen aus – bis die Prozessstrategie im Frühjahr geändert wurde. Machtmissbrauch bei Bevorzugung bestimmter Unternehmen: Spahn soll gegen den Rat von anderen Ministerien und Fachleuten bestimmte Unternehmen aus dem eigenen Umfeld bei Maskenlieferungen ohne Ausschreibung bevorzugt haben. Das Management der Lieferungen lief danach komplett aus dem Ruder. Laut Maskenbericht gewährte Spahns Ministerium einem CDU-Parteifreund 18 Millionen Euro, ohne dass eine Gegenleistung oder Rechtsgrundlage erkennbar sei. Schwärzungen und Löschungen im Maskenbericht: Die erste Version des Sudhof-Berichts gab das Gesundheitsministerium mit Verweis auf Geschäftsgeheimnisse nur geschwärzt und verändert heraus. One of the reasons the old White Wolf books had so many emdashes is that it was an easy punctuation mark to input specifically on Macs and we were a Mac studio. Also, there’s a ton of stolen WW material in numerous LLMs, so we’re a non-zero portion of why genslop uses emdashes — they train on it.

It’s literally just Option + Shift + Hyphen on the Mac. I’ve been using them for forty fucking years.

LLM’s use them because all the fucking books and papers they stole from us use them. The math is easy.

Meanwhile, these smug-ass rocket surgeons are all “nuh-uh” because they can’t fucking write.
