When the media and government move to demonise a minority it’s always noticeable how that minority gets denied the concept of including children or minors, as she was 17 at the time.
Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan has been cleared of harassing a transgender activist, but was found guilty of criminal damage to her mobile phone.

I work near #SheriffStreet in Dublin and it's blighted by far right tricolors at half mast.
I've spoken to a few residents who assured me that most locals don't support the action but are intimidated into saying nothing publicly about them.

The fact that he was found guilty of criminal damage doesn't make the headline, and the person whose property he damaged is described as a "transgender activist" but Linehan has "well-publicised strong views on gender issues". 🙄
This is not journalism failing trans people - it's failing EVERYONE.

I’m usually giving counsel of despair so let me offer a hopeful note now: all this is the desperate thrashing of a dying generation, horrified to see up close the consequences of raising their children to believe violence and racism are wrong, and that people should treat each other decently.
This one really is useful because you won’t see a more clear demonstration of one of the most damaging political phenomena of the era: the reactionary professional mind rejecting unacceptable reality, only able to process and comprehend it via something close to conspiracy theory.
Former Obama speechwriter Sarah Hurwitz says Jewish students shouldn’t have smartphones until they finish high school — so they don’t see the “carnage” Israel and the U.S. have carried out in Gaza.

It was crystal clear that Mel was an absolutely deranged fascist crackpot ten years ago, fifteen, and you’ll notice it has barely hindered her career, not even when the Oslo killer cited her in his crazy manifesto. Quite the opposite, if anything.
Remember when it was revealed that Israel's internal analysis concluded that the only way to reverse the disastrous plunge in Israel's standing was to fuel Islamophobia and portray Israel as the defender of the "West"?

Well, here you have it. Melanie Phillips' speech in NY.

rule of thumb is that there's so much more money on the right, from billionaire golf ball heirs paying people to post to kindhearted grandmas who pass their entire social security check to TV characters to guys who are 100% sure the virtual stripper will settle down with them to make white babies
You can post "this is the America they took from you" with a picture of a blonde in a bikini and get a thousand likes.

theres no lefty take that won't have at least one person and their followers calling you a liberal, a fascist, a revisionist or a fed. It's just not an easy way to grift at scale.

Also, none of this is going to make a blind bit of difference to the number of refugees who come here, it’ll just make their lives harder and remember these are people who have already been recognised as needing Ireland to protect them due to persecution in their country of origin. Shameful.

1. Family reunification is ALREADY limited to "close family"

2. Forcing people to avoid claiming benefits they are entitled to and need under threat of being refused citizenship is horrifically cruel. That was the policy under Michael McDowell and it caused great hardship to the most vulnerable.
New: major overhaul of immigration laws to see citizenship denied to those who got welfare, or are in debt. Family reunification only for close family, tighter rules around self sufficiency. Changes to revoke residency for those who commit serious crimes
