Favourite word of the week: Zeroth

Definition: being numbered zero in a series

Never thought a word existed for Zero like first for one, second for two etc.

Really weird word, only really appliccable in mathematics or science, but impressive if yiu can use it in a fiction book

Word of the week: syzygy (yes its a real word)
Meaning: In astronomy, a syzygy is a roughly straight-line configuration of three or more celestial bodies in a gravitational system.
Definitely have to use that term in one of my books 😂

Hoo boy the ai spambot ‘book promoters’ want ‘Children of Strife’ for their, wait for it, children’s book festival. I mean, I know it’s in the name but mate your algorithm is fucked.

This January I'm honoring my new years resolution to read more Indie SFF. So far I'm very impressed by the setting of Far Removed, first story I've ever read that takes place on a moon! As for my next read, its been a while since I've read any Urban Fantasy, so I'm curious how that will go.

Fun fact I learned today: glacier ice is, in fact, a kind of (monomineralic) rock. It fits the technical definition of rock, which is any naturally occurring solid mass or aggregate of minerals (according to wikipedia).

Good luck to everyone who entered their books into SPFBO 11!!! Taking part in SPFBO X had a huge impact on my writing career (and I’m forever grateful to @marklawrenceauthor.bsky.social for running this competition), so I hope this next batch of authors finds as much value in it as I did.

Don't forget to heck out the r/Fantasy mega sale happening 12/26-27! Plenty of free and discounted books!

Support indie authors and a great charity!

My books are not amongst these but thought this was a good thing to share regardless.

My top 5 reads of 2025! A very broad range of genres, though one of my goals for next year is to read more Indie books.

Never thought I'd have a book about mathematics in my top 5 but Fermat's Last Theorem had a surprisingly cool storyline.

Good article by @rjpholliday.bsky.social about Amazon’s new KDP EPUB/PDF Download Option. A thoughtful analysis on why fear of piracy shouldn't stop you from sharing books in a way that is convenient for readers, and critical enough of Amazon (as it should be).

Unfortunately, the continuous tense for singe is singeing and not singing. Would have been a funny way to confuse readers otherwise.

Hello all!
So I thought I’d share the kinds of books I’m reading, and give people an idea of what inspires my own writing. I'm looking forward to Far Removed, a shorter sci-fi/fantasy story by indie author @cblansdell.bsky.social
My new year's resolution is definitely to read more indie books!

I stood on business today because my local authors’ Facebook group asked basically “what is your limit for how much AI an author can use before you don’t want to buy their book?” And I went on a RANT. Some of it is cropped out because I don’t want to doxx the group/location.
