Welcome, new followers! Please note that while I write critically about Christian nationalism (among other topics), this account is not anti-religion.

Honest disagreement is encouraged. But if you come here with "spaghetti monster" snark & "religion is for dupes" flippery, I will hit "block" like

After spending the day going through my inbox, I’ve decided I would pay twice my regular subscription rate for half the number of newsletters.

If I have a paid subscription, it’s because I want to support your work—not feel guilty that I can’t read enough of it!
You should absolutely opt out of this feature—and you should absolutely know that doing so will screw up your existing user experience because tech companies are awful.

Opting out eliminates your inbox categories (e.g., social, promotion, primary). I went from Inbox 150 to 3,147.
If you use Gmail, you need to be aware of this new feature that allows it to use your emails to train AI, but there is a way to opt out.

Say a prayer for the civics teachers of America, who are trying—against all odds and daily headlines—to teach our kids how democratic government is *supposed* to work.

“All charges against her have been dropped.”

ICE lied. Again. With impunity. They’ll do it again when they inevitably kill a U.S. citizen.

Congress could restrict ICE if Republicans cared to.
Marimar Martinez is a US citizen who was shot by ICE five times in Chicago.

She was then arrested, labelled a “domestic terrorist” and slandered on social media.

All charges against her have been dropped.

In this interview she shows on of the seven holes the ICE agent put in her body.

“Quiet, piggy.”

Whatever filters the man once had—and there were vanishingly few—they are all gone.

All I see is a senile old man in a home, abusing the staff who are just trying to take care of him because his children will no longer speak to him.

I spent October traveling to schools throughout the South talking to students about American history. What I found were young people who understand we can tell a story that includes both the positive and the negative. As one 8th grader in Memphis said, “Doesn’t seem that hard, just say both things.”

Is there any reason to think that Trump’s about-face is any more sophisticated than thinking he can say he wants all the files released and then tell Pam to only include the ones that mention Dems?

The man is basically Mayor Humdinger when it comes to covering up his misdeeds.

This is what we’ve been saying here in Chicago since ICE arrived. When they’re chasing down landscapers and kidnapping guys coming out of coffee shops and terrorizing nannies in parks, they’re not looking for criminals. They’re criminalizing being brown in America.
Remember how Trump said ICE targets “violent criminals?”

Trump’s own DOJ now reports that ONLY 2.5% of the people ICE arrested in Chicago have any criminal history.

That means 97.5% have ZERO criminal record. They were targeted because they were of Latino ethnicity. This is what fascism looks like

Biggest reason to read NOBODY’S GIRL right now is to understand why Ghislaine Maxwell should never ever ever get out of prison.

Even after ingesting a ton of Epstein coverage, I thought of her mostly as an enabler, but she was every bit as evil and culpable as Epstein. No pardon ever.
It is a harrowing read. But the very least every member of Congress can do is make it through a few chapters of Virginia Giuffre’s posthumous memoir NOBODY’S GIRL. My god.

Hey so “underage girls” are…children. The word you’re looking for is children. They’re not like, women-in-waiting or women-lite or whatever. They’re children. I think some of you are very uncomfortable with what that means for you but it is still true.

I don’t want to tell the bishops how to do their job, but maybe if they’d focused as much attention on immigration as they did on largely baseless “threats” to religious freedom over the past two decades, Trump’s fear-mongering wouldn’t have been so successful.

Ahem.
Catholic bishops nationwide recently announced “You Are Not Alone,” a program that lays out ways for Catholics across the country to provide direct aid and solidarity to immigrants in the U.S.
