Several people have commented about Ancestry's updated #DNA ethnicity estimates over the past 24 hours. I've written a short blog post about how mine have changed. To sum up: more Dutch, no longer Scottish. I also stand in solidarity with the people of #Yorkshire!

FINLAND IS NOT RE-GAUGING ITS RAILWAYS

Just because an urbanist influencer has posted a 6 months old piece (that was anyway inaccurate) about it does not mean it is happening!

Finland *might* lay some additional standard gauge track from Sweden to Oulu

So this week’s focus for my @pharostutors.bsky.social course on 17th century records is all about the English Civil War. I’m getting flashbacks to a very old TV drama I watched when I was young. I think it was called ‘By the sword divided’. Does anyone remember this?

What is this thing called “too many books”? 😂 But yes, this #BlueSky vibe is my life.
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

In the CofE the Sunday before Advent is known as Stir-up Sunday because of the collect:

Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I’m not impressed with the research here. There’s some misunderstanding here about how the death penalty and transportation operated. Also, there’s no mention that this offence was part of the Swing Riots that swept Kent in 1830, protesting about tithes, the Poor Law and mechanisation in farming.

This, from the Guardian, is Ryanair at its very worst.

It's not good enough for them to insist that they're a low-cost airline and everyone knows the rules, in circumstances like this...

I wonder if legislation is needed?

Hello, #AncestryHour. I’ve not had much time for #FamilyHistory research, what with studying and also celebrating my son’s 18th birthday. But I’m working on my elusive #DNA link to Mormons in Utah. I’ve found a new family group who emigrated, but they went to Australia, not the USA. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’ve written a piece on the curious lack of media and political interest in the issues faced by our national @britishlibrary.bsky.social. This is strange given we live in a world where ideas, knowledge and research are a long-term source of innovation and insight

And in other news, I’ve ordered 21 wills before the price goes up tomorrow. Most are for known ancestors, but one is for a big businessman from an area where many of my ancestors lived. A cousin has alleged that the local mine owner fathered our ancestor. Let’s see if the will provides any hints!

I’ve not had much time for #FamilyHistory this weekend. Most importantly we celebrated my son’s 18th birthday with family and godparents. And then I needed to crack on with study. But my research into my mysterious Mormon connection took me to Australia and not Utah! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Earlier today I found myself (slowly) adding up various bequests and legacies from a will in pounds, shillings and pence. I know my grandfather (who, among many jobs) worked behind a bar, could do it solely by eye. Up one column, down the next and then back up again.

The vicar of St Neot's in Huntingdonshire was busy on 19 May 1803 - he baptised nine children. I'd love to know if anyone has found more than this! #FamilyHistory #Genealogy

With a day off work I'm working on my Huntingdonshire ancestors, now that parish registers are on Ancestry. But look at these pages - they're all oriented wrong! I'm having to turn each one round, in the opposite direction for alternate pages.
