the chidi one in particular annoys me because "we made something that talks and responds exactly as a human does but it's not a person" is like philosophy problem #102. like if you think that is the correct response you clearly did not actually internalize anything about the good place,

the median level of education for a serious ai researcher is PhD. the mode is PhD. the mean? also PhD. come the fuck on. it is downright unusual for people to not have a PhD

the notion that everyone in ai is an uneducated knuckle-dragger from the depths of ycombinator's shitcoin shop needs to fucking die if people are going to have a hope of understanding what is going on

it's genuinely amazing to me that the good place is practically edutainment and yet there's a whole section of the internet - the majority, probably! - that just watched it as if it was an avengers movie and took nothing from it. this is kind of depressing to me to contemplate deeply.

The problem is that copyright fundamentally doesn't do this.

It's not that copyright "could" do this or it gives you the right to do this somehow but it doesn't, is that this is not what copyright is about.
The argument would be that the copyright holder on the content within the book—the structure of the individual words—did not necessarily grant a license for this manner of using that content, and that purchasing a book only constitutes a grant of a license to read it, not train AI on it. +

The messed up part is the AI bubble is so vast that it is managing to obscure a huge pile of other existential threats to the economy… like bankruptcies at a 15 year high, auto loan delinquency at an all time high, buy now pay later companies carrying $700bn of debt, off the top of my head.

Chaos.
Right, so video game company stocks are crashing because the power of AI supposedly renders them irrelevant. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Oracle stocks are crashing because they spent too much on AI and the market knows they'll never make a return. The economy is absolutely hosed

And things that didn't happen, but could have, at the genre margins.

Like crossovers with Harper's Bazaar. Or this puzzling hybrid of seaport nocturne (1913) and spaceport nocturne (2413). Only a flow—only a liquid that seeks out every cavity in a space—can convey possibility on this scale.

My opinion of Gaiman remains: even in the unlikely event that he’s telling the truth and this is all mischaracterizations of the truth by bad faith actors, the stuff that objectively happened that he admitted to and his behavior surrounding it all is enough for me to want to never support him again

Ronald Reagan's disastrous experiment is over, we don't have to wonder where deregulated capitalism will lead anymore. It's in front of us now, played out far longer than it should have, and people are finally seeing that it sucks ass. We have to radically reverse course, or we're cooked.

There's plenty of data that waymo is safer than average US drivers

But even ignoring that, just think—waymo does 500k trips/week now, if they had were even close to the crash rate of normal drivers they'd be killing a pedestrian like every other week
