it's genuinely amazing to me that the good place is practically edutainment and yet there's a whole section of the internet - the majority, probably! - that just watched it as if it was an avengers movie and took nothing from it. this is kind of depressing to me to contemplate deeply.

The problem is that copyright fundamentally doesn't do this.
It's not that copyright "could" do this or it gives you the right to do this somehow but it doesn't, is that this is not what copyright is about.

The argument would be that the copyright holder on the content within the book—the structure of the individual words—did not necessarily grant a license for this manner of using that content, and that purchasing a book only constitutes a grant of a license to read it, not train AI on it. +
