Washington may also choose to cut billions more from social services, childcare, and higher education in 2026 - but it won’t be because the 43rd LD didn’t put up a fight.
wish this was Oregon 😩 instead we make excuses for austerity
“Scott’s bill would create the “Well Washington Fund” to backfill what the federal government takes away. Absent proactive measures by the Legislature, thousands of residents will face greater food insecurity, less access to health care and higher costs for education, Scott said.”

This is to say: this golf course could be housing 13000-25000 people, AND generating $20-30 million / year in taxes, the entire size of the Dept of Neighborhoods, or >25% of the Seattle Public Schools deficit.

Instead it’s paying $85,770 in taxes and housing no one.

Assessments consider land and "improvements" (the structures) separately.

The land only (no improvements) of a parcel near me is assessed at $11,000,000\acre.

At that value, this golf course would pay over 12 mil in taxes.

Fun fact about my big biz payroll tax bill which will fund vital services: employees making $125k annually already pay it via an “Additional Medicare Tax” on their federal tax returns.

The Well Washington fund gives employers the chance to join their workers in supporting the social safety net.
I hope the legislature and business community come together to develop a solution that works for everyone. State funding of programs is vital. We simply cannot wait any longer…

Okay and 2026 will be a high turnout mid-term election. It will be a referendum on Republican’s lack of leadership, and on Democrat’s ability to step up and assume a leadership role.

Might be a fruitful time for a vote on an income tax that addresses our regressive tax system 👀👀👀
Any talk of an income tax means we have to be ready for a statewide vote.

You know Haywood and the chair thief et al will be trying to ban or pre-empt any sort of income tax with a ballot initiative.

There will be a lot of $$$ spent trying to ban an income tax…
I think this requires a progressive income tax, but I don’t expect Brad Smith et al to come on board with it. They remain wedded to a delusional belief that they can convince voters to accept a low tax, low services model. I think it’ll have to be done over their objection at the ballot box.

The special for D5 next year
could decide the battle for a progressive council, depending on which camp you consider Strauss in. Hollingsworth is also probably looking at Wilson’s landslide in D3 and worrying she’s on borrowed time.
District 5 was roughly evenly split between Harrell and Wilson. Harrell led overall by less than 1 point, winning all but one precinct on the shore of Lake Washington, Puget Sound, or Bitter Lake.

Okay but part of the benefit of an income tax structure is that it incentivizes governments towards improving livability and density to increase their populations and tax base and revenue rather than focusing on racing to the bottom and austerity to compete for fickle big businesses.

It is time for Washington state leaders to step up and figure out how to make our communities safe from these goons.
