Many thanks to @jacquiwine.bsky.social, @causticcovercritic.bsky.social, and @radzpandit.bsky.social for recommending John Bowen's remarkable novel, 'The Girls'. Kept me up until 3 in the morning and I loved every minute of it. (1/2)

Spent the day listening to a few different versions of Verdi's 'Stiffelio'. Final verdict is that this is a much better opera than I remembered and I'd honestly far rather see it than another half-baked version of Vespri (or, God forbid, Giovanna d'Arco or I Masdanieri)

Today's listening: youtu.be/YPfIaiozchQ?... This is probably my favourite female voice version of the piece (favourite male is baritone Jean-Christophe Benoit in a 1967 radio broadcast with the ORTF and Andre Girard).

I imagine the San Diego Opera website could possibly, somehow, maybe, make searching their performance history more difficult, time-consuming, and inexact but I'm really not sure how. *throws up hands in despair and frustration*

Our beloved Alice Wong has joined the ancestors. It was one of the great honors of my life to call Alice my friend, co-author & co-conspirator. She was a true genius, a force of nature the likes of which the world has never seen before. I love you, Alice, and am equal parts grateful and devastated
