My new Genre Grapevine is an update on both the Anthropic AI settlement and other genAI class action lawsuits filed by authors. While I'm not happy with the Anthropic settlement, I've come to see it as merely the first battle in a much larger war.

It’s been a long day. I need a nice cup of tea and a book to help me settle down. Chamomile with lavender should do. From the evergrowing TBR pile comes The Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal. Good night…🫖☕️📖

I highly recommend this movie around Christmas or New Year's, especially if you don't like most Christmas movies but also think DIE HARD makes the list on a technicality.
This Christmas, don't miss Satoshi Kon's masterpiece TOKYO GODFATHERS about middle-aged alcoholic Gin, teenage runaway Miyuki, and former drag queen Hana - who find a discarded baby on Christmas Eve. See it 1st, 6th & 17th December! 🎟️ buff.ly/sZVHfBF

Tesouros que encontrei no estande da Editora Patuá na Festa do Livro da USP que se encerra hoje. Já estou curtindo a poesia de Érika Batista “Na Rua, Na Lua, Na Sua”!

Pretty much ANY statistic you see cited to frighten you about vaccines comes from the VAERS database. (Including the recent evidence-free missive from Vinay Prasad). Here's why VAERS can NEVER be a proper source for population-level vaccine risk estimates.

My TBR pile grew significantly during November. In big part because I didn’t read consistently due to unforeseen curveballs, but also because I kept adding books to it regardless.🤷🏻‍♀️

Christina Ricci in Adams Family Values, arguably a great Thanksgiving movie!
I’m thankful for my family! We’re not as interesting as The Adams, but we have our moments.

Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, and Lily Tomlin in Nine to Five, a great movie from 1980 that sadly continues to be relevant.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

I have been reading Asimov's & F&SF since I could first read, and they were first on my list when I started trying to get stories published. If this company cares at all about the future of the magazines, they need to stop taking advantage of writers and bring their contracts in line with the field.

Working on the revision of a novelette. I let it rest for a while, and I’m glad it doesn’t look too awful… as far as first drafts go.
No, it’s terrible.

It’s been a long day, the kind that leaves one empty. And still, I can’t sleep.
Thank goodness for books.
Take me to a land of wonder far away from my mundane toils, where good wins over evil, and happy endings feel possible.

This is brilliant!
During her speech, after the announcement, N.K. Jemisin mentioned the “Lovecraftian Horror of AI” as one of the great challenges of our time.
I think there isn’t a writer who wouldn’t agree with this perfect “descriptor.”
✨ Please join SFWA in celebrating the announcement of our latest Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award: N. K. Jemisin. ✨
