Maybe instead of identifying specific ICE agents who do particularly heinous things, we could just penalize everyone who was on payroll at the agency starting by a certain date.

I'm not one for false optimism. But what I witnessed today in Minneapolis was tremendous, both in scale and exuberance. It was a stunning answer to the federal assault on Minnesota, a show of solidarity that gives us something to hold on to during times that are unforgiving.
“Everybody Showed Up”: Stunning Crowds at Minnesota Day of Strike and Shutdown Against ICE
Extreme cold didn't stop the shutdown on Friday as some 100 faith leaders were arrested, residents stayed home from work, and an estimated 50,000 or more marched through downtown Minneapolis.

I've been here 24 hours, but already with what I've seen, well, I genuinely believe we're going to win. People here are well aware that what happens here impacts the entire country, that it sets the tone for resistance. ICE is angry, ICE is terrified, of how deeply unpopular it is.

some larger lessons from this:

1. realism can be stranger than fiction. we often associate 'realism' with a kind of staid, stern, and uncompromising documentary approach, whereas real life is always much stranger and in many cases stupider

THREAD.

My parents' cat Bridget vanished. As the weeks dragged on they became ever more worried, so to distract himself my dad began to paint Bridget's adventures, imagining her travelling through time and popping up at some of art & music's most important moments.

I've collected his work here...

there was a post going around awhile ago re. what a women’s sports version of “Heated Rivalry” might look like which enforces oppressive norms of femininity the way the men in Rachel Reid’s books feel trapped by oppressive norms of masculinity, and I have been thinking about this nonstop ever since

Hi Australia. Now we are having a national Day of Mourning today for the victims of the Bondi attack can we, the Aboriginal people, have our day of mourning on Jan 26 back please.

We have mourned on Jan 26 since the first day of Mourning on Jan 26 1938 and we would like it back.

The photo of the camera flying through the air is such a powerful symbol of the efforts to document the atrocities.

I usually am dim on sofa activism.

But when you share people's efforts to document the Minneapolis situation, you are helping. Share. Widely.

But once any cop finds any cash, all they have to do is (and I'm not making this up) charge the cash with criminal activity. Your cash doesn't have the right to an attorney or a fair trial since it's not a person. Cops steal more money every year than thieves do. #forfeiture

To add on to this, because Erin's getting a lot of "ugh, then what CAN we say?" in the comments: the problem is not a naughty list of banned words to be replaced by approved synonyms. The problem is that general "intelligence" as a concept is largely incoherent and only useful for eugenics.
I’m seeing increased use of this word and I just want to gently suggest that if there’s one word you can manage to remove from your vocabulary it should be this one.

It was coined by a eugenicist who used it as a diagnosis to forcibly institutionalize and sterilize mentally disabled people.
The Origins of the Word "Moron" Are Actually REALLY Sinister
It's much more than just a casual insult.

In case you are wondering, the story behind this photo is that these two dogs had borrowed their mum's car for the first time & were trying to persuade me to drop what I was doing & go & break into a tennis ball factory with them. The little brown one even "did the eyes" at me but I stayed strong.

The vast majority of ppl who use AI to make images and video have never touched and would never touch Photoshop/AfterEffects/Illustrator/etc. The issue is Adobe trying to squeeze its users with subscriptions, and other customer-hostile behavior.

Had an intriguing editorial discussion recently: how did people in the past talk about 'minutes' when they didn't have watches or standardised times? How does that affect your thinking?

He then left the dissolved solution on his shelf and fled to Sweden.

(After the war he un-dissolved the gold and the prizes were re-cast.)

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention.

The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.
Opinion | I'm a Minneapolis sociologist who studies violence. Here's how ICE observers are helping.
Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.
