Old lady prefers to be on the tennis court or in my garden if I'm not exploring Ottawa area on my bike or in my kayak. Otherwise interested in global affairs, health & the environment. Used to work on ethics in civil society organizations.

What I find so deeply frustrating about these columns about our supposed inability to build things is the complaints about "bureaucracy" frequently turn out to be "Waah, they won't let us poison this river with selenium!" or "Waah, I don't want to have to share revenue with the local First Nation!"

The MPO is an admission of dysfunction. It only exists because the rest of the government’s regulatory apparatus is unfit for purpose.

From what I’ve read so far, well done American voters! That warm breeze you feel is the breath of Canadians‘ whews coming your way.

We know that daylight saving time feels like a relic from the past, but until it officially disappears, we are still doing the time warp, #OttCity!

While setting your clocks back one hour, check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to make sure they are working properly.

I spoke to the @ottcity council committee dealing with Lansdowne 2.0 (first time delegate!). I didn't talk about the pros and cons, but the alarming lack of transparency around this file. #ottcity www.youtube.com/live/asifIBt...

With music or sports or apprenticeships, we don't blink at the idea that it takes many hours to develop skills. With higher education, there are a bunch of fucking knobs who think you can just skip the hard work and all the hours and magically produce people capable of critical thought.

Oh no!
Very sorry to hear of the passing of Tim Cook.
One of Canada's best historians, his books were fantastic. He was nice enough to give me a tour of the Canadian War Museum where he was the chief historian.
A truly great Canadian.

Every year I challenge myself to not open the Halloween candy until the 31st. Very proud of myself last year, made it. Bought the candy today, so challenge on! Didn’t even manage to close the truck. A falling apart world will do that.

I’m not a member of either church, but in this age of leaders pushing hard for division, this is actually reassuring when normally I would barely care.

This is my MP. As a voter this is the kind of small thing I pay attention to in between elections & remember when it’s time to vote. The post doesn’t name the winners, nor even include a link to the site where I could learn who they are. The result is focus is on his participation & a photo op.
It was an honour to join the Famous 5 Foundation Ottawa in celebrating this year’s remarkable honourees.

Their dedication and courage embody the spirit of the original Famous Five — paving the way for a Canada where every woman and girl can thrive, lead, and break barriers.

I love this kind of tradition.
At Yonge & Dundas Jays fans are obeying the pedestrian scramble, as is the custom & returning to sidewalk each light cycle.

Based on the photo, once people arrive at the declared location they will all have to try to catch a baseball with the ticket wrapped around it. Good luck everyone.

The Republicans' definition of the FCC's role -- as dictating what's in "the public interest" -- is instructive of the difference between populist and pluralist approaches to governance.

Let me explain.+

This is awful and tragic. But we know when the count is finished so many of those deaths will be the women who were in those buildings. Not a woman to be seen in any of the clips in the villages or in the hospital. youtu.be/X61NlmXs2Io?...

Middle of watching a women’s tennis game when they cut over to show guy’s walking into their match! I have three, THREE, channels showing the US Open. Would it kill you @tsnofficial.bsky.social to have even one of those stay on a women’s game? And get a feed where commentators don’t talk non-stop!

A very helpful discussion for those of us trying to understand the issue. I have friends who think we should make the cheap Chinese EVs available because it’s good for the environment since more people will be able to access them. Regardless of canola problem. Much more complex than that.
For the morning crowd, my latest YouTube episode, where @stephaniecarvin.bsky.social and I talk about the dangers of signing an EV deal with China as a way to get past the canola tariffs #cdnpoli

When it is "hundreds of thousands of Canadians are being disrupted by a strike." it cannot be tolerated.

When it is "hundreds of thousands of Canadians are being disrupted by cuts of Customer Service Staff." that's just good business practice.

This federal government introduced anti-scab legislation in the federal jurisdiction, and since then have done everything they can to make sure it's virtually irrelevant. Don't need scabs if the government's not going to let anyone strike in the first place!

One of my first jobs was working in a hospital in ‘81 when CUPE went on strike. This action by today’s flight attendants & their union leadership oozes Grace Hartman energy. Stand tall CUPE, Canadians are with you against AC’s unfair practice and the government’s betrayal of your rights.

And a woman’s job. Don’t imagine traditionally male jobs ever had such a pay structure.
This isn’t just an Air Canada issue. It’s the industry standard. And it dates back to a time when being a flight attendant was perceived as a glamourous sexy job. The pay was crap, but the joys of travel, of seeing the world, were supposed to make up for it.
