This is one of my favorite genres and I agree. All of the names are terrible and confusing. I usually just say "it's like Path of Exile."

Wild Arms XF did a unique take on this where just switching to a job gave you 90% of its power right off the bat and leveling the job was primarily to unlock its abilities/passives to equip on other jobs. Counter intuitive, but the approach avoided a lot of potential game design problems.

Generally games with high levels of customization (like a FF job system) are better if you get the whole team early on so you can work on customizing them.

Games where each character is more unique are better suited to giving the player new characters regularly.

It's been ages since I played FFT, but I remember that basically nobody who joined later than say Chapter 2 made my regular team. The "one character" felt like cheating and everybody else was too weak compared to party members I had been working on.
