i was inspired to get one when i saw a beauty on a job just down the road. it had grown up a pole and then along a second story deck and was obviously doing well. i asked how old it was- 4 years!

on three kings island the sole survivor of this species survived simply because it was growing over the edge of a cliff which made it inaccessible to the goat population.
i don't mind them helping with the lawn. i should have protected it when i replanted. might yet survive, hopefully.

i say gallant because it has survived a previous defoliation event when the arapawa sheep escaped and paused to sample it en route to freedom.

this morning i discovered that the rabbits which have been feasting on the lush spring regrowth of the lawn have decided to vary their diet by completely defoliating the gallant offspring of what was once the world's most endangered plant.

drowned logs like this have some differences from the norm. the extractives which give it a natural durability have leached out. the distinctive smell which would normally identify the species is lost. the timber itself behaved nicely, straight and true, planed up well. still lustrous.

momentarily confused and unable to identify a piece of timber by sight and or by smell. macrocarpa? beech? mātai?
then as i cut into a few times the unusual smell triggered a memory: about 25 years ago i made some doors out of a mātai log which had been salvaged from the inangahua river.

its easy to mock nelson eh. i do it all the time. but at least we voted to retain māori wards, unlike our neighbours in tasman and marlborough. and fwiw , in the last election, which was a rout for labour, our rep was re elected. conservative yes. reactionary..not so much.

guy who grew up on rakiura told me this beastly trick him and his mate as kids uses to pull on rough crossings there. eat a few mouthfuls of canned diced fruit. sidle up next to a seasick passenger. pretend to vomit in paper bag. then swallow contents of paper bag. never failed to induce a hurl.
