some joints for your viewing pleasure. 4 double hung sashes, recycled oregon timber cut out of an old 12"x 6" roof truss. these are constructed to suit a 24mm thick double glazing unit, replacing the original 1910 single glazed sashes. the glass weighs 23 kilos per sash.

i've got this handy machine in the workshop. takes the hard work out of cutting up a carcase

i make new sashes so i can get a 24mm thick double glazing unit in there. they are constructed differently to cope with the bigger rebate and heavier weight. here's another conversion, but taller- 1500mm

i took some pics at the time. these are kelsey windows- i re used the 1930's hardware as it's very good quality brass. you can still get this hardware btw- 100 years and still going!

thanks! i was vaguely of a blind spot but not how it functioned. i live rurally in a house with no curtains, primarily so i can view the stars:)

after the raupatu the land was surveyed off. this trig station stands on an old pa site on my friend's land, near lake ngaroto. a plaque attached reads ' warning, it is an offence to interfere with this marker' in english and te reo. seymour would make it an offense to learn our history

working at my son's place on a bathroom makeover. we needed some toms ( props/braces) to hold the shower lining in place- used some bamboo from my place. we also had a discussion over lunch about the perils of ai. he reckons i'm over reacting, sent this pic to show the lighter side of things

momentarily confused and unable to identify a piece of timber by sight and or by smell. macrocarpa? beech? mātai?
then as i cut into a few times the unusual smell triggered a memory: about 25 years ago i made some doors out of a mātai log which had been salvaged from the inangahua river.

palestinians recognise us however

i occasionally strike an inexplicable area of rot in a mātai sill. i've wondered if it's from timber cut around this area where there is an area of sapwood which has then been enclosed with heartwood as the tree has grown. all of the sill timber is sound until you dig in.

gave old mate graham a wee stick of wood to carve a sign for the workshop a couple of years back.
he put it off and put it off because he's a traditionalist and carving all lower case stuck in his craw.
showed up with it day before yesterday. good things take time.

good frost here this morning. this little woodstove is in the one room of the house which is finished- rest of the house is a construction zone.

it's raised the temperature 4 degrees in half an hour, boiled the coffee and cooked the porridge

uses around 1 recycling bin worth of wood an evening

some of these branches would give Escher a headache

this tree should have seen a psychoanalyst a long tome ago before things got out of hand
July 26, 2025 at 4:35 AM
yes, melanoxylon particularly. the density of the timber can vary drastically from tree to tree unfortunately. striking a big tree with dense heartwood is like finding gold:)

not great stuff to saw up if your asthmatic tho

an australian rugby league broadcaster is now officially more progressive when it comes to referring to this country by name than the māori leader of a party currently in govt.
