Mainstream media obsesses over Te Pāti Māori as if Parliament is where rangatiratanga happens. It's not. The real exercise of rangatiratanga is done in Iwi boardrooms managing billions in assets, Hapū asserting authority over whenua me wai, and whānau/whanui making decisions about their future.

While you are all here, just a reminder, 18 years ago to this day, the Police, citing the Terrorism Suppression Act, invaded the homes of whānau across the country, in what the IPCA went on to say ‘unnecessarily frightened and intimidated' people.

In two days, we mark the 148-year anniversary of Chief Justice Sir Prendergast's declaration that Te Tiriti o Waitangi, having not been incorporated into domestic law, was a 'simple nullity'. Prendergast's ruling was used to justify the theft of vast tracts of Māori land for generations.

I wish some conversations could be kept AMONGST Māori and not need to be analysed by Pākehā and viewed through Pākehā systems and power 🙄🙄🙄

The Olive green areas are councils where citizens voted down Māori wards (the little blue blob in the middle is Kirikiriroa, which voted by a whisker to retain theirs).
Coincidentally those Olive green areas also pretty accurately represent land confiscated by the crown after the Waikato wars.
