I'm going to start a new university, and it's going to be just some faculty and some students meeting in the forest.

No buildings, administrators, landscaping, trustees, development, general counsel, registrar, climbing walls...

Everyone gets a computer and books, that's it.

AAUP chapters across the nation in solidarity against Trump's compact!

"Jonathan Gilligan, who proposed the resolution, [said]
that the language of the resolution closely mirrored that of the University of Virginia’s...to 'help ensure unity & solidarity'" for others opposing the compact.

That's what is reported by Bloomberg News here (also Time), based on an anonymous source: www.bloomberg.com/news/article.... ..but I haven't yet heard confirmation from any universities saying a communication has been received. A lot of schools on break right now, so maybe news is slow...

Uni administrators and trustees: We need viewpoint diversity.

Professor, outside of class: Working class should organize to overthrow capitalism

Uni administrators and trustees: No, not THAT kind of viewpoint diversity

If true this has gone out to all schools this is a huge deal that threatens academic freedom in the United States, and the credibility of the entire US higher ed system.

But Bloomberg News is the only outlet I see reporting this, and their claim is based on a single anonymous source.
wamsleylab.bsky.social
Is this confirmed by any source other than this Bloomberg News article? I see it nowhere else, and this says based on single anonymous source.
wamsleylab.bsky.social
Has this been confirmed by any source except Bloomberg News?

Wut!? Is this accurate? Can anyone confirm the compact has actually been sent out to all schools?

Bloomberg News is the only source I see saying this, based on an anonymous source.

Also, STOP CALLING THIS AN "OFFER". Its a threat to destroy higher ed.

Make an effect size prediction!

@jamiecummins.bsky.social and I are replicating Balcetis & Dunning's (2010) "chocolate is more desirable than poop" (Cohen's d = 4.52)

Let us known in the replies what effect size you think we'll find. Details of the study in the thread below.
wamsleylab.bsky.social
I predict d_rm will be only between 2 and 3, owing largely to the noise inherent in online responses. I assume upper bounds on reasonable effect sizes would be larger in a high quality in-person setups vs. online.

I don't think this is true. Dartmouth's President came out with a very vague and short statement a week ago, which notably did NOT say they aren't signing. (president.dartmouth.edu/news/2025/10...).

This article is probably referring to that statement, which I read as contentless at best.

I looked at changes in enrollment shares for first-year classes in 2022 & 2023 vs. 2024 & 2023 (aka pre- and post-SFFA decision).

Nice. But to really take this to the next level of #highered bullshit, you should be sure to exclusively refer to this slogan by it's acronym, "NeFOF" (pronounced: "knee-foff").

P.S. - Please STOP calling this "SPECIAL FUNDING TREATMENT".

The "compact" promises to remove all research funding, all federal financial aid, all visa approvals, and tax exempt status from any school that won't comply. Thats a threat to crush universities, not a promise to give special treatment.

🚨MIT says "NO"!!🚨

They are the first to respond to the "compact" sent to 9 universities last week -- crucially, this sets the tone.

“Fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone”

Students and faculty at Brown know the right answer to Trump's "compact".

But 9 days since the letter went out and no response from their board and administration.

Does deciding whether you want to abandon #academicfreedom and integrity really take this much time?

That's the faculty's position, but sadly, faculty have very little if any control over big-picture strategic decisions at a university. Administrators (presidents, provosts, VPs) and Boards are the deciders. Alumni and donor voices can be much more powerful.
wamsleylab.bsky.social
While the faculty senate at U of Arizona opposes it (as several other faculty bodies at these schools have), unfortunately faculty have very little if any control over the big-picture strategic decisions of a university. The administrators and boards of these schools are the deciders.
