I think a sea change is coming due to the extreme nature of ICE's actions, and this will not be enough to satisfy the greater number of voters. I know I want actual consequences and massive reform, where I once might have been placated with strong words.

Thats a point I frequently make to students. Part of why slavery “died off“ in the North was it wasn’t cost effective. You needed to spend so much more to house and cloth etc your labor in the North.

The US’s falsifying history project is much older than that. In some ways it has always existed. But It began in earnest immediately following the Civil War and the Lost Cause narrative the South was able to perpetuate through organizations like the Daughters of the Confederacy.
